Mid Lancs Week Q

Report From Paul Eastham

In division 1 the ‘old school’ met this week when MGS A hosted St. Andrews A, but it wasn’t an old school result! The final score was 4-14 to the visitors who took all 4 pts to remain at the top of the table; Joe Steele & Nicki McGrath won all of their 6 games. Hawks A had a fine 13-5 win over a five sided David Lloyd & with the 4 pts move level with them.  MGS B got beat 2-16 this week by leaders, Cross Feathers to remain rooted to the foot of the table. Ste Andrews & Hayley Harrison won all of their 6 games to be the best pair on the night & remain 3 pts from pole position with a match in hand.

In division 2, St. Andrews B lost 4-14 to Hawks B as Chris Hoyle & Lee Clayton won all of their 6 games to be the best players. Hawks C moved into joint 4th place with a 12-6 win over bottom team, Carlton B. Paul Smith & Joanne Richardson won a game in the final set to rob Hawks of the bonus point. Maxine Watson took all of her 6 games to be the POTM on the evening. MGS D got beat 4-14 by their own C team this week to stay dangerously in the drop zone; however the C team’s fortunes look bright, as they remain at the top of the table with a match in hand. Beth Andrew & Helen Blakeley won all of their 6 games to be the best players on the night; Ash was the MVP for the Men’s & handed over the keys to Tom who moved into the basement. Clayton Crusaders A came up against the joint leaders of the division, Clitheroe A and went on the ropes in the levels as Aqsa Adam took all of her 4 Ladies to help the visitors go into 2-6 lead. The opening 2 mixed sets were split before Clitheroe went into overdrive and won the next 2 sets to win the match; however the final set was all to play for as the bonus point was up for grabs as the score stood at 4-12. Matt Cole & Jess Portas took the 1st game to ensure the full 4 points went back home to Clitheroe. Final score, 5-13 as Jess & Aqsa won 5 games each to be the best players & the team remain in joint 1st with MGS C.

In division 3, Mythop A got beat 1-17 at home to 2nd place team, Clayton B who keep on target for promotion with the 4 points. Clitheroe B had a tight match this week when they played Hawks D at home and were 5-3 up at the end of the levels. A split set in the opener was followed by Pete Wright & Gill Fourie winning a pair in the 6th to go 8-4 ahead. Graham & Anne Robinson won both in set 7 before a split set in the 8th to set up a nail-biting finale as the score stood at 9-7. In that final set, Graham & Anne won both games 13-15 & 11-15 to help draw the match for Hawks. Pete & Gill were the best players for taking 5 games. For the 3rd week in a row, the hillbilly’s were back at the fort and this week’s victims were MGS E. They got off to another cracking start in the levels, going 6-2 up & Tim Shipway took all his 4 Men’s. Ben Yau & Sarah Woodhouse won the opening mixed set to pull the score back to 6-4, but Garstang won the next 4 games in a row to win the match. Final score was 12-6 as Ben & Sarah took a pair in the 8th to snatch the bonus point; Tim was the POTM on the night for taking all of his 6 games.

In 4, Hawks E moved into the dizzy heights of 4th place on the table when they won 15-3 over a 5 sided Crusaders D & the best player on the night was Dave Sherrington, he won 5 games, narrowly missing out on taking all 6 by losing a setting game 14-17.  Project 12 hosted Garstang B, but lost 1-17 as Paul Whitehouse & Sarah Coultas won a game in the final set to stop the total whitewash. With the 4 pt win, Garstang stay in a solid 3rd place just below a promotion spot; Emma Gilfoyle was stat the best. Top of the table team, Clayton Crusaders C won their home match this week against St. Andrews C but they didn’t have it easy in the opening sets of the match as the hosts found themselves 3-5 down in the levels as Jane Godsland took all of her 4 Ladies games. Sam Gorrell & Laura Curtis won both games in the opening mixed set to level the match before a split 6th set. Then it was time for the leaders to put their foot on the pedal, as the ripped through the next 6 games for a final score of 12-6. Sam was the POTM on the night for winning all his 6 games & help the team win the match albeit they dropped the bonus point. Their lead is now shaved to just 2 points over Evergreens, but they have a match in hand and their next match is against Garstang B, who themselves are in with a massive shout of promotion, so that match is going to be an absolute corker!!!!   Evergreens B had a fine 14-4 home win over Penwortham A to remain in 2nd place on the tables & with the 4 max pts, they still stand a very good chance of gaining promotion. Phil Barlow & Julian Pilling won all of their 6 games to be the best players.

In division 5, a five sided Whittle lost 6-12 at home to Evergreens C and Simon Wynn won 5 of the 6 took for the hosts! Penwortham B had a tight match this week when they hosted Brindle and found themselves on the ropes after the levels when Dave Burridge took all his 4 Men’s to assist the visitors going into a 3-5 lead. The opening mixed set was split before Dave Jackson & Rachael Moon took a pair in the 6th set to level the match and then in the 7th, Les Halton & Amanda Berry took Brindle back into an 6-8 lead when they took both games. In the 8th Set, Dave & Rachael split against Nick Fish & Linda Kozera to set up a nail-biting final set as the score stood at 7-9. In that final set, Ian Turner & Cathryn Jackson held their nerve for Penwortham & took both games 6 & 12 to help draw the match. Rachael was the best player on the night, she took 5 games.
