Mid Lancs Week – O

Report From Paul Eastham

In division 1 this week, MGS A hosted David Lloyd who had drawn their 1st match together & MGS got the better of their opponents in the 2nd match, so how would this match pan out? Well, in the levels, Alan Clarkson won all his 4 Men’s & Jenny Stothard won all her 4 Ladies for MGS to go into the mixed all square. A split opening mixed set was followed in set 6 by Alan & Joanna Holt winning a pair to take David Lloyd 5-7 ahead. Matt Timms & Ruth Flatman built on that & also won a pair in the 7th to make the score 5-9. The match was won in the 8th with a split set & a split final set made the final score 7-11. Alan won all 6.  MGS B remained rooted to the foot of the table when they got beat 4-14 at home to Hawks A and in the maximum 4 point win, Michelle Skinner was the POTM on the evening for winning all of her 6 games.

In division 2, Clitheroe A conceded their match against St. Andrews B & are fined £10 and deducted a single league point. Hawks B had another crunch match this week when they took on MGS C at home and both Men’s sets were split and each team won a pair in the Ladies for an even score going into the mixed. Ash Gibson & Beth Andrew won a tight pair in set 5 before a split 6th set for a 5-7 lead. Andy Finch & Alison P Truman won another tight pair of games in the 7th to take MGS into a 5-9 lead. Ash & Beth then followed suit again with another tight pair of games to win the match before Caz & Luke Bennett took the final set for a score of 7-11. Overall, a hard fought match from 2 top sides fighting for promotion & supremacy of the division and the result puts MGS in joint top slot with Clitheroe, but have 2 matches in hand over them. Ash was best, he picked up 5 games. MGS D met Hawks C at home this week and before the match kicked off, both teams were on the same points and teetering around the drop zone. The host got off to a cracking start in the levels, with Guy Wallace winning all of his 4 Men’s to aid MGS into a 7-1 lead going into the mixed. Then the 1st three mixed sets were all split to give MGS the win at a score-line of 10-4. In the 8th set, Nick Ingham & Kelly Anderson won a pair to snatch the bonus point for Hawks and the final set was split for a match score of 11-7 which saw MGS pull away from the dreaded red line and leave Hawks in the drop zone. Guy won 5 to be MVP. Clayton Crusaders A took on the bottom team Carlton B…. but the card has not come in at the time of report being sent.

In division 3, Clitheroe B hosted leaders, Evergreens A and the hosts picked up all 4 points in a 4-14 victory which saw them go 11 pts clear at the top of the table. Colin Campbell, Lynette Tidy & Sharon Mullholland all won 5 games each to assist in the win. The Hillbilly’s were back at the Fort this week, doing battle against Mythop A. The final score was 16-2 to Garstang who keep in a very healthy 3rd place on the table with the 4 points. All 3 Ladies won their 6 games, Serena Hindle, Steph Tsang & Ali Crosby.  Hawks D had a fine 17-1 win over MGS E; only Phil Rhodes & Linda Franks winning the single game to stop the total whitewash.

In division 4, Project 12 lost 4-14 at home to Hawks E who surge up the table with the 4 pt win. Hannah Stewart won her 6 to be POTM. Clayton Crusaders C took on their own D team and the 16-2 result was probably expected to keep the hosts on top of the table with a match in hand over their joint rivals, Evergreens B. Jade Thornhill & Sophia Kelly won all of their 6 games to be MVP’s. Evergreens B kept status quo at the top of the table with joint leaders Clayton C when they to be their opponents this week,   St. Andrews C. In the 16-2 victory, Steve Dudley and Emily Milner were the best pair on the night as they both won all their 6.

In division 5, leaders, Mythop B hosted 2nd placed Preston College in a battle for promotion and the host stormed to a 6-2 lead which included Mark Green winning all his 4 Men’s games. Then in the mixed sets, 5, 6 & 7 were all split before Mick & Hazel Bradshaw won both games in set 8 to claw the score back to 9-7. In the final set, Dave Dunk & Janet Keys won the 1st game in setting 15-17 to give College a fighting chance of a draw, but in the final game, Dave Whiteside & Maureen Turner took the game to 7 to win the match 10-8 for the leaders of the division. Mark won 5 for Mythop & Hazel won 5 for College to be the best player on the night and the 3 points won put Mythop a massive 12 points clear to make them favourites to lift the shield.

Whittle, Whittle, Whittle….. another week, another late card, probably another excuse and another fine to go into the dinner dance coffers for the piss up, ahh well, cheers! Hic!
