Mid Lancs Week H

Report From Paul Eastham

The 2nd third of the season stated in division 1 when Carlton A lost heavily to Cross Feathers who shoot straight to the top of the table, as predicted, with an 0-18 thrashing of the hosts. Statistically, Fay Andrews was the best player conceding just 19 points. Hawks A beat MGS B 16-2 to climb 6 points clear of the drop zone; Nick Hodgson & Katie Dixon Turner won all of their 6 games.

Division 2 saw Carlton B fall 6-12 at home to Clayton A to stay rooted at the foot of the table. An array of people won 5 games for Clayton, but for my money, the best player on the night was Jane Parkinson who won 5 of the 6 games taken for Carlton. Clitheroe A smashed St. Andrews B, 17-1 to maintain 2nd place on the tables; only Phil Livesey & Karolyn Hustler winning the single game stopped the complete whitewash and it was Jess Portas who was statistically the best player on the night. Hawks C had a fine win over MGS D this week and not only managed to win the match, but took all 4 points to clear the drop zone area by 6 points & go level with their opponents. In the 15-3 win, Beth Cowell, Debbie Taylor & Jackie Atherton all won 6. MGS C had an ever so tight match with Hawks B this week and with a late start it got a little sticky at the end with being chucked out of the hall by the caretaker! All square at the end of the levels as each team won a pair of Men’s & Ladies. Luke Bennett & Jenny Brookfield won the opening mixed set for a 4-6 lead for the visitors and then Ash Gibson & Beth Andrew levelled the match taking a pair in the 6th. Hawks then went 6-8 up again as this time Chris Hoyle & Lisa Coulthard won both in the 7th before Ash & Beth pulled the match back again to an 8 all classic as the clock stuck 10. In come the caretaker and out came the beggin bowls! The bribe (whatever it was) worked and play commenced & Tom Lowe & Alison P Truman won both nail-biting games 17-14 & 15-10 for a final score of 10-8 to sit them on top of the table by a single point. MVP was Ash, but Beth also won her 6 games and Matt Seddon is fetching more supplies down to the basement to stock up for the long haul.

In division 3, MGS E lost at home 4-14 to Hawks D who soot up the table with the 4 point win; Gail Monk & Anne Robinson won 6 each. Leaders of the division, Evergreens A won their home fixture against Clitheroe B, but didn’t have it all their way as they failed to get the bonus point. They race ahead in the levels, being 7-1 up at the end of the levels in which Sharon Mullholland winning all her 4 Ladies. Two split mixed sets followed to take the score to 9-3 and then Sharon & partner Andrew Morris won a pair in the 7th to wrap the win up at 11-3. The final 2 sets were split including the last game of the match being won by Clitheroe’s Pete Wright & Jane Makey at 13-15 to steal the bonus pt. Obviously, it was Sharon who was the POTM for winning all her 6 games.

In division 4, St. Andrews C failed to get any points this week when they lost 5-13 to Evergreens B, who themselves bounced back from last week’s defeat were they didn’t get any points either at Garstang. The maximum 4 point win puts them into 3rd place on the tables as Tony Augustyniak & Lee Wigham both won 5 games each to be the best players on the night. Hawks E had another great week again, this time it was against Project 12, but Ol’ Huffer-Puffer was missing from the line up? At 6-2 up after the levels, the hosts were breezing and they built on the good lead by a split set in the opening mixed and a pair in the 6th in which Dave Sherrington & Marion Bamber won for a 9-3 lead. A mini come back in the 7th by John Wright & Sarah Coultas took the score to 9-5 and then in the 8th Jon Jackson & Kat Platt took a game to steal the bonus point. Final score after the last set was 12-6 and the best players on the night, winning 5 games were Kyle Sumner & Marion. Garstang B maintained pole position with an 11-7 win over Penwortham A, but it wasn’t all plain sailing! After the levels, they were 3-5 down and then went 7-5 up by winning the first 2 opening mixed sets; but then Caroline Coxen & Alan Turner squared the match again by winning both in set 7. However in the final 2 sets, Garstang went into overdrive and won all 4 games for the final score and 3 points in the bag. Lee Meakin was the POTM on the evening, he won all of his 6 games to help the team win. Clayton C maintained 2nd place on the table and crept to just a single point behind the leaders, Garstang with a 2-16 victory over their own D team. Jordan Green & partner, Sophia Kelly won all of their 6 games to be the best pair on the night.

In divsion 5, Brindle had a close match with Whittle and after a right old scrap in the levels were the score was all square at 4 all, the opening mixed set was split and then Steve Hudson & Catherine Dobson got a breakthrough in the 6th set when they won both games to take a 7-5 lead. But in the 7th, Simon Hardacre & Carol Heaton took a pair to level the match again and in the 8th the set was again split to set up an 8 all classic. Simon & Carol rose to the challenge, held their nerve and took both games to 9 & 12 to pull off an 8-10 win for Whittle. Carol was the MVP on the night, she won all of her 6 games but the team stay at the foot. Preston College had a tough match at home this week when they took on the leaders of the division, Mythop B. From the start of the levels the hosts were on the ropes ending the session 3-5 down and a spit opening mixed set was followed by Dave Whiteside & Helena Lemper stretched Mythop’s lead to 4-8 when they took a pair in the 6th set. After another spit set in the 7th, Jasper Vijayakumar & Julie Bennett won a pair to rack up the win. Final score was 7-11 to keep Mythop top of the table by 5 points and the MVP on the evening was Dave, he won all of his 6 games. Evergreens C had a close match against opponents, St. Andrews D and were 3-5 down in the levels before Chris Chatwood & Margaret Whitham won a pair in the 5th to square the match up. A split 6th set was followed by Phil Newsome & Mel Grove winning both games to give Andy’s a 6-8 lead. Then Steve Drinkwater & Pauline Charnock levelled the match again in the 8th to set up an 8 all classic. In the final set, Phil & Mel took both games for Andy’s to pull off an 8-10 win. Evergreens now lie in joint 2nd place, 5 points adrift of the leaders, Mythop B. Mel was also the POTM on the night for winning all her 6 games.
