Report From Paul Eastham

In division 1 this week, the old school met at MGS A’s new venue, St Mary’s college on Royal Avenue and the score turned out to be an old school one as well. The match kicked off with Andy’s winning 5 of the 8 levels games to take a 3-5 lead but MGS struck back in the mixed when Jared Matthew & Becky Ashton won a pair in the opening set and then Rick Wallbank & Jen Rigby built on that to take the score to 7-5. In the 7th set, Joe Steele & Nicki McGrath brought the scores back level again by winning both games to 2 & 11, but then Rick & Jen won both their games to 13 & 12 in the 8th to take MGS on the brink of victory at 9-7. In the final set, Joe & Nicki set off to try and draw the match by winning the opening game to 7, but Jared & Becky went into overdrive and raced away in the final game to a 15-3 victory and make a final score of 10-8. Jared & Jen were the best players on the evening when they took 5 games each and keep MGS A at the top of the table. Hawks A played against David Lloyd and at the start of the match, 3 of the 4 mixed were split with the visitors taking a pair in the 2nd Men’s to take a 3-5 lead. Nick Hodgson & Michelle Skinner took both in the opening mixed to square the match and then Matt Timms & Emily Hollis won a pair in the 6th to take David Lloyd back into a 5-7 lead. A split set in the 7th took the score to 6-8 before Matt Boyes & Joanna Holt took both games 10 & 13 to help go over the winning line. Nick & Michelle won the final set to end the match at 8-10 and also won 5 games each along with Matt times to be the best players on the evening. MGS B fell 4-14 at home to last year’s division 1 champs, Cross Feathers and the maximum 4 points takes them into joint 2nd place on the tables. Statistically, the best player on the night was Fay Andrews playing in the number 2 position.

Meanwhile, Matt Seddon moved into the basement this week!! J J Clayton Crusaders A took on the leaders of the division, Clitheroe A and apart from winning the opening Men’s pair, the hosts were on the ropes throughout the whole match.
