Report From Paul Eastham
In division 1 this week, Hawks A opened their season with a draw against MGS A. In the early part of the match, Hawks were 7-1 up after the levels after losing just 1 Ladies game, but in the mixed they only managed to win 2 split sets to let MGS off the hook. Probably, the most aggrieved person on the night was Andy Owen who won 5 games for Hawks and Rebecca Ashton won 5 games in the later end of the match for MGS to help salvage a draw. St. Andrews A opened their account with a 14-4 win against MGS B; Joe Steele was the POTM on the night for his 6 games. David Lloyd beat Carlton A 11-7 to go 2nd on the tables. Clarky & Joanna Holt won all of their 6 to help win the match, although in the final set, Andy Wiseman & Cath Bagley from Carlton won both games to steal the bonus point from under their noses!
In division 2, Carlton B got beat 3-15 at home by Hawks B who recovered from last week’s loss against MGS C to take all 4 points. Clitheroe A sit proudly at the top of the table with another convincing win against MGS D. In the 14-4 max point win, Matt Cole & Jess Portas won all of their 6 games to be the best pair on the night and help take the max points. Hawks C had a tight match this week against Crusaders A, and the in the levels they won all the ladies and the visitors took all the Men’s games. Neil A Jones & Michaela Stanford won the opening mixed set and then Mo Suleman & Kelly Anderson stuck back in the 6th set to even the match again at 6 all. A split set in the 7th was followed by Neil & Michaela winning both games in the 8th to 12 & 8 against Mo & Kelly to take a 7-9 lead. The final set was split to give an 8-10 win to Crusaders & the 3 points. Neil was awarded the POTM on the evening for winning all of his 6 games in the No 1 slot. MGS C thrashed St Andrews B 17-1 to keep in 2nd place on the table; only Sarah Gradwell & Janette Norris winning the 1 game stopped the complete whitewash. Statistically, the best player on the night was Matt Seddon, he propped up the 2 other injury prone cRocks in the match as Ash Gibson slid down into the basement. As for limp wrist T, the one with the gammy knee, there is talk of him being outsourced next week when Andy Finch may make a guest appearance while T slides into the D! J
In division 3, MGS E lost their home match this week 6-12 to visitors, Clitheroe B. Steve Pym & Louise Burrell won 5 games in the match to help win their 1st fixture of the season. Christina Atkinson played her final match of the season (seems too soon to be saying that) to take a break to have her 2nd baby and I wish her all the best for her extending family. In their 1st match of the season, Clayton Crusaders B won all 4 points in a 13-5 win over Hawks D and in the maximum point win, Dylan Butcher & Victor Chow won all of their 6 games to be the best players on the night. Evergreens A took maximum points again this week to sit proudly at the top of the table when they beat their closest rivals, hillbilly’s, 15-3. Sharon Mulholland took all of her 6 games in the No 3 slot to be the POTM on the evening.
In division 4, St. Andrews C beat Project 12, to recover from their loss last week to Evergreens B. Colin Marney & Jane Godsland won 5 games each in the 12-6 win to be the best pair on the evening. Garstang B won their 1st match of the season this week when they took all 4 points in a 13-5 victory over Evergreens B. Hawks E lost their home match this week against Crusaders C, who sit proudly at the top of the table with the 4 point max win. In the 2-16 win, the statistically best player on the night was Jordon Green on 3rd Men’s slot. Clayton Crusaders D fell 3-15 at home to joint leaders of the division, Penwortham A and this week, it was Rachael Moon that won all of her 6 games to be the POTM on the evening.
In division 5, Brindle had a battle with visitors Mythop B this week. Three of the opening level sets were split, but Mythop took a 3-5 lead when Maureen Turner & Julie Bennett won the last Ladies set. The opening mixed set was split and then Nick Fish & Linda Kozera won the 6th set to square the match. The 7th set was split and in the 8th was won to 9 & 8 by Mark Green & Ngan Pilkington to go 7-9 ahead. In the final set, Steve Hudson & Margaret Muir won the last 2 games 13 &6 to help draw the match. Preston College beat a five sided St. Andrews D 14-4 as I believe someone caught the wrong train to miss the match. Hazel Bradshaw won 5 of her 6 to be the best player. Penwortham B had their 1st match of the season this week and took on Whittle at home. The visitors got off to a cracking start in the levels as they took 6 games to take a 2-6 lead before Sam Cail & Cathryn Jackson took a pair in the opening mixed for Penwortham to pull the match score back to 4-6. The 6th set was split before Simon Hardacre & Carol Heaton won both games in set 7 to go 5-9 ahead. Dave Jackson & Johanna Huber won both games in set 8 for Penwortham to take the score to 7-9 and set up a nail-biting finale. Needing both games to share the points, Sam & Cathryn got off to a cracking start as they won the first game to 12, but in the final game, Simon & Carol held their nerve and took the crucial game 13-15 to earn a 8-10 win for Whittle. Dave won 5 games for Penwortham Simon & Simon Wynn took 5 for Whittle to be the best players on the night.
