Mid Lancs Week A

Report From Paul Eastham

Hi Folks, here we go again… the 2017/18 season is here & results/tables can be seen ‘live’ online at http://w.fixtureslive.com/

Thank you once again for all your prompt cards and I will update you when the handbooks are ready for distribution.

Division 1 started a week early due to the extra fixtures & the very 1st fixture of the new season was MGS A who took on newly promoted Clitheroe A at home and needless to say the visitors found their opening fixture tough losing 16-2.

St. Andrews A had a cracking opening win over last year’s runners up, Cross Feathers. The match was all square after the levels, but Andy’s powered their way through in the mixed to win 11-7; Joe Steele was crowned the 1st MOTM of the season for his 6.

Another division 1 newbie, Clayton A found their 1st match a hard pill to swallow…. They got thrashed 0-18 at home to Hawks A.

David Lloyd got off to their usual start by winning 17-1 at home against Carlton A to be the firm favourites again.

Then in week A, Carlton A turned their fortunes around when they hosted Clitheroe A. At 5-3 up after the levels, the hosts had the edge & in the mixed they built on their lead to snatch all 4 pts in a 13-5 victory: Andy Wiseman & Phil Price won all their 6.

Not surprisingly, MGS B lost 2-16 at home in their 1st match of the season to David Lloyd as Ruth Flatman was statistically the best player in the match & Tom Lowe stopped the total whitewash by winning the 2 games gained for the welcoming hosts.

St. Andrews continued with their winning start by thrashing Hawks A 18-0; Steve Taylor was stat the best & keeps the team 2nd.

Cross Feathers recovered from their 1st loss of the season by beating Crusaders A 17-1 to shoot into 3rd place on the tables; only Natalie Appleyard & Hannah Settle stopping the complete whitewash by winning the single game. Fay Andrews was statistically the best player on the evening. With just 3 weeks to go to the birth of her baby, Rachael Graham has now played in her final match for Cross Feathers & her team mates would like to wish her a ‘big good luck’. On behalf of the league, I would also like to wish her all the very best wishes & no doubt, she will be back on court very soon.

In div 2, newly promoted MGS E hosted St. Andrews B & got beat 3-15 as Sarah Gradwell was statistically the best on the night.

Hawks B took on their own C team & at 6-2 up they were breezing, but a hard comeback in the mixed ensured a close 10-8 finish. Chris Hoyle & Jackie Atherton won 5 each at No 2 slot to be the best pair & help put the 3 points in the bag.

MGS D took on their C team & were shown no mercy in a 0-18 thrashing; Emily Broadbent was statistically the best player.

Crusaders B had a tough match against Evergreens A in their 1st match of being in division 2 and at 3-5 down after some tight levels games it was ever so tight in the mixed with 4 of the 5 sets all split, just Derek Hilton & Simone Binns winning both games in set 8 to help Evergreens go home with the 3 points. Final score was 7-11 as all 3 Evergreens Ladies, Simone, Lynette Tidy & Sharon Mulholland winning 5 games each to help their team win. I absolutely love it when I get a little note like this attached to the card……. from Claytons Captain, Ali Peacock….. ‘Absolutely brilliant match with some tight results. Great way to start the season’. It really does make my day when I see / hear this…….. This is exactly why we play sport! Thank you Ali. J

In division 3, Clitheroe B fell 7-11 in their match against Carlton B who were cruelly relegated last season from 2. The visitors were 3-5 up at the changeover, but in the mixed they won 3 sets to go through the winning line. Paul Smith & Janice Schofield won 5 games each at the No 2 pairing to assist in the 3 point win & Gill Fourie won 5 to help get the bonus point for Clitheroe.

Garstang A won their 1st match in the division over newly promoted MGS F who ran away with the division 4 shield last year. At 6-2 up, the hillbilly’s were in command at the fort, but in the mixed every set was split apart from the 9th set to make the final score 12-6. Amit Mistry was the best player on the evening, he won 5 of his 6 at 3rd man to assist in the 3 point win.

Hawks D beat their own E team 14-4 to take the 4 max points to top the table as an array of the team won 5 games each.

Evergreens B won 11-7 at home to Crusaders C and it was Phil Barlow who won 5 games to assist his team in taking 3 points.

In 4, St. Andrews C thrashed Whittle A 18-0 to go straight to the top of the table; Graham Forrest & Zoe Watts were stat best.

Whittle B had a tight home match against newly promoted Mythop. However, it was the hosts who were on the ropes from the offset, as they were 2-6 down going into the mixed & 4 of the 5 mixed sets were split; only the final 9th set was fully won by Gary Richardson & Karen Butler, but it was too late as Mythop went through the winning tape in the 8th set. Final score 8-10 and while there was no overall best player on the night, its worth mentioning there were 6 split sets indicating everyone chipped in!

Clayton D had an ever so tight match with Penwortham A; the score was bang on even at the end of the levels & this was then followed by 2 split sets before Pen took a 6-8 lead when Alan Turner & Caroline Coxon won a pair in the 7th. However, Crusaders won the final 4 games to take the match 10-8 as Richard Langford & Polly Logan won 5 games to help edge the match result.

In 5, Clayton E got off to a fab start by taking all 4 pts in a 14-4 victory over St. Andrews D as Ben Armitage was MOTM for his 6.

The very 1st draw of the season was seen at All Hallows when Penwortham B won the final 3 games of the match to snatch a draw when they hosted Evergreens C. At 3-5 down after the levels (and it was 1-5 before that) Penwortham lost the 1st set to go further down (3-7) before scrapping together a mini comeback & taking 6 of the 8 games on offer to share the points on the evening. Luisa Malaney (Pen) & Tony Augustyniak won 5 games each for the respective teams to be the best players.
