Mid Lancs Week P

Report From Paul Eastham

This is the final session of the season with a couple of promotion & relegation battles to solve & this week in Division 1,   MGS A beat their own C team 14-4 to keep themselves in a solid 4th spot on the tables. Jared Matthew & Becky Ashton were the best pair on the evening, they won all their 6 games in the No 1 slot. As for the C team, its bye bye, way gone!

Hawks B were officially relegated this week when they were defeated 2-16 by Carlton A. The only players to make a dint against the visitors were Dan Porter & Lee Clayton who took the 2 games won for Hawks, but I’m afraid it’s over & out!

MGS B lost out on the bonus point in the final game of their match against Hawks A; Chris Foote & Michelle Skinner took the game 13-15 to ensure the visitors took all the 4 pts back home with them & also won 5 games each to be the best players.

In division 2, St. Andrews B climbed ever closer up to the promotion line with a 14-4 home win over Carlton B, who sink into deep relegation trouble with Garstang A winning at Hawks D (below). It’s not impossible for Andy’s to steal a promotion spot, but they are running out of games to win and they still have to play the current top side, Clayton. Andy Powers, Karolyn Hustler & Janette Norris all won 6 games to ensure their team bagged the maximum points on the night.

An already doomed Hawks D hosted Garstang A, who were hoping to do a great escape & with Carlton B losing to St. Andy’s it was an ideal chance to take advantage of leapfrogging over them. The hillbilly’s got off to a cracking start winning 6 of the level games to go 2-6 up and continued to build on that in the mixed only losing 2 of the 10 on offer to run out 4-14 winners & took all 4 pts back to the fort, knowing for the 1st time in months they have clawed themselves out of the drop zone by just a single pt. Stuart Smerdon & Sian Meakin won all of their 6 games to help ensure the max pts went in the bag to drop Carlton B into the relegation zone & guess who plays each other on the final game of the season? Yep, Carlton v Garstang!!

MGS D won 12-6 at home to Hawks C to stay in a solid 4th place on the table; Claire Banfield & Jenny Stothard won 5 games.

This was the big clash we have been waiting for, Crusaders A v Clitheroe A in an ‘8 pointer’ to decide who lifts the division 2 winners shield. As with any big match like this you would expect a nervy start, but both teams fought extremely hard with 3 of the 4 opening games being decided in setting! After the levels, the score stood at 4 all with all 4 sets being split before a breakthrough in the opening mixed set as Sam Moss & Natalie Appleyard took a pair to take a 6-4 lead. The 6th set was split before Sam Ames & Hannah Settle won both in set 7 to go 9-5 ahead. Matt Cole & Jess Portas struck back in the 8th to fetch the match score up to 9-7 & a chance of a draw was on the cards, but Sam & Natalie held their nerve in the final set to win both games to 10 & 5. Final score was 11-7 & opened a 6 point gap between the 2 sides with 2 matches to play. Sam & Natalie were the best pair on the evening, they picked up 5 each & virtually guarantee they will now win the division.

In 3, MGS E beat Penwortham A 17-1 to keep the pressure on the leaders, Clayton B. As for Penwortham, only Glenn Harrison & Janet Wood stopped the total whitewash by winning the 1 game, but now are 8 points from safety.

A five sided Clitheroe B lost 8-10 to Evergreens B to help the visitors to open an 8 pt gap between them & the drop zone.

Springfields A were beaten 8-10 by Hawks E & it was best pair on the night, Graham & Anne Robinson, who put the final nail in their coffin in the last set by winning both games 6-15 & 9-15. At 4 all after the levels, Springs won a pair in the opening mixed before Hawks took 4 games in a row to go 6-8 up. Chris Porter & Jane Green then won set 8 to leave the 8 all classic.

Clayton Crusaders D kept in a strong 3rd place on the tables when they beat St. Andrews C, 13-5. In the 4 point win the MOTM on the evening was Richard Langford, he won all of his 6 games in the No 2 position.

In division 4, Springfields B lost 3-15 at to Clayton Crusaders E who keep their promotion hopes alive by bagging the max 4 pts & it was Robert & Richard Langford & Esther Worthington who all won their 6 games to be the best players on the night.

Whittle B moved into a challenging 3rd place on the table when they beat Flight 15-3; Gary Richardson & Karen Butler won 6.

Evergreens C who are now relegated, gave Champions of the division, MGS F a run for their money when the visitors only just managed to win the match 8-10. The valuable bonus point didn’t save the doomed team as they are 4 points adrift with only 1 match left, but nevertheless it was a gallant effort against the runaway champs. Reece Parry won 5 games to be best.

A five sided Whittle A lost all 4 pts in a 5-13 defeat by visitors Project 12; J. Jackson won 5 to be the best player on the night.

In 5, St. Andrews D moved sharply up the tables this week with a 13-5 max point win over Brindle. Chris Wormesley, Emma Ryding, Anita Murray & Emma Hindley all won 5 games each to make the 4 point win possible.

Garstang B moved a step closer to winning the division with a narrow 10-8 win over Whittle C. With Garstang winning all the Men’s and Whittle winning the Ladies, it was all to play for in the mixed. The home team then ploughed ahead, winning the opening 4 mixed games before Whittle stuck back with a pair in the 7th set. But Robert Cockrill & Katherine Oaks won both games in set 8 to go over the finishing line and take 3 points from the match & Robert was also MOTM for taking all his 6.

Mythop suffered their 1st loss of the season when they hosted their final home match to Preston College B. At 3-5 down after the levels, the hosts found it difficult to recover as they also lost the 4 opening mixed games to go 3-9 down before winning a pair in set 7 to claw the score back to 5-9. Dave Dunk & Jan Harrison sealed the win for College in the 8th by taking both games before Mythop got 2 consolation games in the final set to snatch the bonus pt. Dave & Jan won all of their 6 to be the best players & help them leapfrog over their own A team & demolish Mythop’s chances of lifting the division 5 shield
