Report by Paul Eastham
Despite my plea last week for new dates for matches to be played in December I’ve received just ‘TWO’ new dates & SIX more fixtures were postponed again this week, taking the total to 35 rearrangements on my list!!!!
In division 1 this week, Carlton A pulled a rabbit out of the hat when they beat 2nd place Hawks A, 10-8. The score was even after the levels & then Carlton won all the 4 mixed games in set 5 & 6 before Hawks squared the match again by winning sets 7 & 8. Then in the 8 all classic Dave Wiseman & Cath Bagley won the final pair of games 15-9 & 15-2 to pull off a remarkable victory but despite the 3 points, they stay in the drop zone! Cath also won the LOTM award for her 6 games. After last week’s emphatic win over old school rivals St. Andrew A, MGS A hosted Champions, David Lloyd & got a right old reaming! Only Pete Fearns & Ashley Gibson saved the complete whitewash by winning the single game in the 1-17 score. Hawks B beat Springfields A 16-2 & despite them wheeling out the lame & wounded (even I was asked to play!) they still remain on track to win at least a game a match. A refreshing change to see my mate Dave Ainscough back on court again! 🙂 MGS B were beaten at home by St. Andrew A, but not before Tom Lowe & Alex Mackie snatched the vital bonus point in the final set. In the 6-12 defeat, Nicki McGrath was back in the A team winning her 6 alongside Katie McWalters who also won 6.
In 2, the Hillbilly’s had a cracking win at the fort this week when they beat last week’s leaders of the division, Hawks C, 11-7. The match started with 3 split sets in the levels before Garstang went ahead winning the next 6 games to virtually kill of the fixture at 9-3. Sets 7 & 8 were taken by Hawks, but in the final set the hosts went through the winning tape to win the match, 11-7 & propel themselves well away from the drop zone. Stuart Smerdon & Cath Coleman won 5 games each. Hawks D got beat 4-14 at home to MGS C who move into joint 1st place again with Hawks C who fell at the fort this week. Andy Finch was once again the MOTM for taking all his 6 games & next week they will probably inflict more pain on Spring B. Meanwhile, talk of the devil, Springfields B had a 4-14 home defeat at the hands of Clitheroe A, as Damian Cooke & partner Alison Leaver picked up all of their 6 games to be the best pair on the evening & pile more pressure on the home side. MGS D lost 7-11 to Carlton B who now move a massive 11 points from the dreaded drop zone that they were in just a few weeks ago! Jane Parkinson was LOTM for taking her 6 games and next week they host the ‘inform’ Hillbilly’s!
MGS E extended their lead at the top of division 3 this week with a 14-4 home victory over Penwortham A, who now are 6 points from safety. Matt Seddon & Trevor Brown won all of their 6 games to be the best players on the evening. Hawks F got knocked into the middle of next week with a 0-18 home thrashing by Evergreens A; Derek was MOTM again!
In 4, Preston College A beat Whittle A 11-7 at home as yet again, Hazel Bradshaw took home the LOTM award for her 6. St. Andrews D managed to scrape the bonus point in the very last set as they lost 6-12 at home to Springfields D. Tim Lawrence & Julie Youngs picked up 5 games each to be the best pair on the evening, losing the other game in 17-16! Whittle B got beat 7-11 at home by visitors MGS F. The result puts MGS within the chasing pack for promotion, 1 pt behind their opponents as yet again Chris Cochrane went home with the LOTM award for winning all of her 6 games on the evening. Evergreens B went back to the top of the table with an 11-7 win over Clayton Crusaders C who now take up the runners up spot. Ed Gilbertson was the main man on the night; he took his 6 to claim the MOTM award. The main resistance from Crusaders was Laura Bradley; she took 5 games of the 7 won for her team. It’s gonna be a real fight to the line in this div.
Project 12 beat Brindle 11-7 to maintain a massive 14 point lead over their opponents at the top of division 5. Chris Hutcheon & Geoff Bean won 5 games each to help take the 3 points; Brindle remain in 2nd spot. Mythop had a fine 12-6 home win this week over Whittle D. Mike Duggleby & Irene Ormesher won a vital game in the final set to help snatch the bonus point and keep the team within the chasing pack. Julie Bennett won all of her 6 Ladies to be the LOTM on the evening and I would just like to share with you all what Mythop’s Captain/Secretary, Rowland Kirkman had to say when he sent me this week’s card. ‘’ Can I say we are newcomers to the League and we are well impressed with the “good spirit” shown with Teams so far, I suppose getting Pauline’s Cup Cakes helps?’’ Being extremely proud of our league, I thank you for those words Rowland and I’m sure it will inspire those clubs/teams you have played against this season to continue in the manor that I believe ‘all’ our clubs adhere to within the league. JSt. Andrews E lost 8-10 at home to Clayton Crusaders E who celebrate their 1st win of the season! It doesn’t lift them from the foot of the table, but the confidence within the team must have been lifted by gaining their 1st 3 points. Unfortunately they face Project 12 next week and I think we all know what’s gonna happen then…. Gulp!!!! 😥 Whittle C beat Evergreens C, 16-2 to keep in touch with the chasing pack for promotion.
