In division 1 this week, Carlton A fought hard against MGS B, but lost 7-11 to remain in the drop zone. Hawks B lost 2-16 to David Lloyd with Chris Chu & Andy Owen taking the 2 games off them; Wendy Higgin was stat the best. Springfields A fell 3-15 at home to Hawks A, Rick Wallbank & Andy Owen picked up all of their 6. Alison P.T won the 3.
St. Andrews A stayed at the top of the table this week, but by the skin of their teeth! Nothing could separate the teams in the levels, but in the 1st mixed Andrews took both games & then the next 3 sets were split making the score 9-7 going into the final set. Fay Ormesher & Ryan Ashcroft took the 1st game 12-15 and incredibly were 6-14 up before losing the game in setting (17-14) to Joe Steele & Karolyn Hustler to give the win to Andrews! Every credit to Cross Feathers for taking St. Andrews to the wire, but they had Joe to thank for the 3 points, he helped to turned that final game around & won 5 games on the night.
In division 2, Carlton B hosted Clitheroe A in an explosive tie at Wellfield. Everything was even after the levels before the visitors drew first blood in the mixed taking the score to 4-6 before Carlton stuck back in the 6th set to level the match again. Clitheroe then took the next set followed by a split set to make the score 7-9, with everything to play for in the final set. Under great pressure, Dave Boon & Joanne Richardson won both games 15-12 & 15-10 to draw the match but they remain in trouble.
At the fort this week, the hillbilly’s were back in action as they battled against MGS D. At 1-5 down, Garstang were looking defeat in the face so early on in the match, but they pulled their socks up & won the next 6 games in a row to turn the match around at 7-5. In the 7th & 8th set MGS stopped the rot by taking all 4 games to leave the hillbilly’s in a pickle again, but Stuart Smerdon & Sian Meekin won the final games to help earn a draw for Garstang; Stuart won 5 to be the best player on the night.
Hawks D felt the full force of Clayton Crusaders A as they fell 2-16 at home. Half the team got 6 games including Sam, Neil & Ciara to help take all 4 points home & keep their promotion hopes on track; as for Hawks D, the future is looking bleak!
Springfields B were beaten 3-15 at home by St. Andrews B as Nicki McGrath & Sarah Gradwell won all of their 6 games. MGS C got off to a bad start when they battled with their closest rivals on the tables, Hawks C. The visitors were 2-6 up after the levels, but stalwarts Andy Finch & Claire Banfield stopped the rot in the 5th set & the same happened again in the 6th as Martin Hobin & Lynn Hosegood took both their games to square the match up. Hawks then stuck back again in the 7th as Sam Ammes & Lisa Coulthard won both their games followed by Rob Courtley & Maxine Watson taking the required 2 to take them over the finishing line in the 8th to end MGS’s winning run. MGS took the last 2 games to make the final score 8-10 & the result takes Hawks within a whisker of their opponents at the top of the table. Claire was the best player picking up 5 games.
In division 3, Hawks F had such a tight match at home to Penwortham A. After the 1st 2 sets the score stood at 2 all, then this was followed by 5 split sets in a row as nothing could separate the two teams. Then in the 8th, Dave Sherrington & Marian Bamber for Hawks won both games to make the score 9-7, but in the final set, Alan Turner & Caroline Coxon won the final games to force the draw & share the points on the evening. No overall best player in this tight match, as everyone chipped in! Clitheroe B hosted Springfields C this week in an ever so tight match at Oakfield. At 6-2 up, the home side were well in charge after the levels, but 4 games in succession for Springers saw them square the match in the 6th set. The 7th set was the won by Clitheroe & again the visitors struck back in the 8th to force an 8 all classic in the 9th, still nothing could separate the two sides, as the set was halved. Elaine Norris was the LOTM on the night in this tie for winning all her 6 games. In a crucial tie at Wellfield, MGS E clashed with Clayton B, but a strong performance by MGS ensured a runaway score of 3-15 to bag all 4 points & keep them on top of the table. Trevor Brown & Maria Lyons were once again the best on the night. Evergreens A took all 4 points off Hawks E in a 14-4 home win as Nic Isherwood took home the MOTM award for taking 6. St. Andrews C kept in 2nd place with a fine 15-3 win over Flight; Darren Robinson & Hannah Burgess won their 6 games.
In 4, Mick & Hazel Bradshaw from Preston College A won the final pair of games in set 9 to set up a 10-8 victory over Evergreens B. Despite being on the losing team, Karen Kenyon won 5 games for Evergreens to be the best player. MGS F took on Whittle A at home this week in a tight match at Wellfield. MGS were 5-3 up after the levels & extended their lead to 7-3 in the 5th set when Mark Womersley & Chris Cochrane won both games. However a brave comeback by Whittle in the remaining sets saw Andrew & Maxine Garland take the final 2 games 15-12 & 15-11 against Mark & Chris in the final set to pull off a draw to share the points. Simon Wynn was the best player on the night, he won 5 of his 6 games at no 3. Penwortham B lost heavily at home to St. Andrews D. In the 3-15 win Dave Noble, Anne Ashworth & Jane Godsland won 6. Whittle B took all 4 points at home to Springfields D with a fine 13-5 win. Nevertheless the visitors did go down fighting as 5 games went into setting with hosts winning 4 of them which helped them to take the max points on the night. Simon Hardacre & partner Carol Heaton won 5 games each to be best players on the evening. A five sided Clayton C beat Preston College B, 11-7 to remain in the chasing pack; Richard Langford & Kathy Yeung won 6.
In division 5, Brindle beat Garstang B, 11-7 to keep in the mixed of the chasing pack as Nick Fish took 6 for the MOTM award. Two newbies in the league met this week in the form of Mythop v Project 12, but the visitors proved to be too strong as they went back home with all 4 points intact with a 4-14 victory to keep the 2nd on the tables, as all 3 Project guys picked up their 6. Clayton Crusaders D hosted St. Andrews E & took all 4 points in a 14-4 victory to keep them top; Mathew Francis was MOTM. Whittle C beat Clayton Crusaders 17-1 to move them into joint 2nd spot on the tables.
