Report by Paul Eastham
In division 1 this week, MGS A battled with Hawks A, who up to press haven’t lost a match yet, but that changed as the visitors bubble burst with a heavy 15-3 defeat by the hosts. Jen Rigby & Julie Bates were the best players on the evening, they won all of their 6 games to ensure all the 4 points went in the bag & help thrust their team into 4th place on the table. David Lloyd made light work of Carlton A when they brushed them aside with an 18-0 thrashing; Clarky was statistically best
Springfields A managed to keep their promise of the season to take at least one game of each opponent by taking a single game off St. Andrews A & it was so nearly 2 games but a rare appearance by Mr P stopped that in setting in the 7th set. Cross Feathers are so far doomed not to play at home this season as MGS B cried off! 😥
In division 2, Hawks D hosted Springfields B & were hunting their 1st points of the season from a team that’s usually below them. The result was a 3-15 defeat as Jason Loffman & Lucy Currie won all of their 6 games to fling Springs up the table. MGS C moved to top spot with a maximum 4 point win over Carlton B. Andy Finch & Rob Oakes were the best players on the evening in the 16-2 win that leaves Carlton in unusual waters at the bottom end of the table. Clitheroe A took all 4 points off MGS D with a 15-3 home win in which Damian Cooke & Pete Wright took all of their 6 games to boost the team up into the middle of the tables. Next week they travel to Carlton B to sniff out more points! Clayton Crusaders A hosted the Hillbilly’s this week & what a close call it was for the hosts, every single set was split up to set 6 before Clayton won both games in the 7th. The 8th set went to Garstang to set up an 8 all classic in which Sam Moss & Laura Bradley won the final pair of games 17-14 & 15-3 to win the match 10-8 for Crusaders. Chris Kelly was 200% better this week, he won 2 games!!! No overall star in the match, but nevertheless it certainly was a nail-biter of a match. St. Andrews B hosted last week’s leaders of the division Hawks C and the reason why I say ‘last week’s leaders’ is St. Andy’s took all 4 points off them in a 14-4 drumming to notch up their 1st defeat of the season. Dave Savage & Janette Norris won all of their 6 games to be the best pair on the night & help put their team in joint 2nd place on the tables with Hawks C.
Division 3’s leaders, MGS E took on 2nd placed team Hawks E in an epic battle at Wellfield. After being 2-6 down in the levels, the hosts fought back winning the next 4 games in a row to square match. Whilst the 7th set was split & the 8th was taken by MGS to take the match score to 9-7, it was all to play for in the final set. Ian Hayhurst & Marian Bamber from Hawks won the 1st game 15-13 to be on track to force the draw, but ran out of steam in the final game as Matt Seddon & Janet Rance won the game 15-5 to clinch the match 10-8 for MGS. The result keeps them on top of the tables & are the only team now in the division not to have suffered a defeat. MGS face Clayton B next week, will their bubble burst? Hawks F suffered a heavy defeat at home to Clayton B as they crashed to a 2-16 defeat. Rachael Sides was statistically the best player on the night to help Crusaders stay 2nd, & as I said above, they face MGS E next…. What a mouth watering tie! 🙂 Flight gained another point this week when they hosted Springfields C and it was so nearly 2 but it was the visitors that had the final word on where the 3 points were going. No overall player shone out in the 8-10 result as it was such a tight match! Penwortham A came so close to earning the bonus point, but failed to grab a game that went to setting (16-17) in the final set as Clitheroe B went back home with all the 4 points in the 5-13 result that boosts them up the table. Evergreens A had a heavy home defeat this week at the hands of St. Andrews C. The 4-14 result flings Andy’s into joint 2nd spot on the tables as Lisa Harrison won all of her 6 games to be the LOTM & a very unusual sighting of Mrs P on court. 🙂
In 4, Preston College B fell 5-13 at home to leaders, Evergreens B and the 5 games won by the hosts were due to Lee Wigham being injured. Ed Gilbertson was statistically the best player & the team returns next week to play the A team. St. Andrews D lost at home this week to Whittle A who remain in 2nd spot as Simon Wynn & Rachelle Haynes won all their 6. Springfields D had a 11-7 win over Preston College A to put them back in the mix at the top end of the table. Steve Hudson & Nigel Parkinson-Truman won all of their allotted 6 games to be the best 2 players on the evening. A battle took place at Wellfield this week between the ‘experience’ of MGS F and the ‘youth’ of Clayton Crusaders C; who would win in the battle of brains over brawn? Well, after the levels, the 2 sides couldn’t be split as everything was square at 4 all. Into the mixed they went & MGS got both games in the 5th followed by 6 straight games in a row for Clayton to take them over the finishing line before the home team got the last 2 consolation games to make the final score 8-10. Crusaders stay 3rd in the chasing pack & as for the experiment… well I never expected anything less from the result, but Chris Cochrane won her 6 games for MGS & Richard Langford won 6 for Clayton to be the best players on the night; as for Neddy- quack! 🙂 Whittle B overcame Penwortham with a 13-5 home win that takes them up into joint 3rd place on the table, just a single point behind their own A team. Carol Heaton & partner Ant Houghton won 5 games to be the best pair on the night.
In division 5, the local derby took place between Garstang B and Project 12. After the levels, everything was all square in the match, but then the visitors blew away Garstang in the mixed, taking all 10 games on offer to win the match 4-14. Jack Needham & Christine Hutcheon won all their 6 games to be the best players, as next week they limber up to play Mythop.
Mythop picked up their 1st win in our league when they beat Crusaders E, 16-2; Elizabeth Davis & Alison Kirkham won 6 each
Evergreens C lost 5-13 at home to the hands of Brindle as Nick Fish & Linda Kozera won the last pair of games to seal the 4 point max win to help take their team into joint 3rd place on the tables. Nick & Linda also took all their 6 to be best players. A 5 sided St. Andrews E picked up the bonus point when they got beat 6-12 by Whittle D who move into joint 2nd place.
Whittle C lost 5-13 at home to leaders Clayton D to keep the visitors at top of the shop.
