Report by Paul Eastham
Well, here we go again… the 2014/15 season has kicked off & a huge thank you for the prompt cards to get this report out in record time! The easiest way is to take a photo with your smart phone & email it to me at firstname.lastname@example.org
The 1st result in division 1 of the new season was a clash between the ‘old school’ comprising of MGS A v St. Andrews A. First blood in this clash went to MGS, they won the opening Men’s, but after that it was virtually all Andy’s as they took all 4 points in a 4-14 victory. All 3 Ladies (Liz, Karolyn & Katie) walked away from the match with a clean sheet in this tie. On the same evening, Carlton A hosted a new team in our league; Cross Feathers… but some very familiar faces/names made up this awesome team who tore the hosts apart with a 5-13 maximum point victory. Last seasons ‘Player of the Year’, Fay Ormesher & Hayley Harrison won all their 6 games to steer their club to victory & come back home with all of the 4 pts.
Hawks A beat their own B team on the night, but they didn’t have it all their own way as the B team put up a cracking fight & managed to take the bonus point away from them. Nick Hodgson won his 6 to be awarded the MOTM.
MGS B beat division 1 visitors, Springfields A with a 15-3 max point win to take them top of the shop on game diff; Danny Dickin & Jared Matthews took all of their 6 games to help take all 4 points, but new week St. Andrews await them!
In division 2, the Hillbilly’s who managed to avoid the drop faced Clitheroe A who were promoted from 3 last season. The 1st 3 sets were split & the 4th was won by Clitheroe in setting giving the visitors a marginal lead going into the mixed. Garstang then won both games in set 5 to even the match up before Clitheroe steamed ahead in the mixed, taking the next 7 games to go through the winning post. But Stuart Smerdon & Sien Meekin won the final game 15-9 to steal the bonus point! Same old story! Give them another lifeline and Springfields B still become division 2’s whipping boys! However, saying that they were up against a strong Clayton team, who I tip will be up there at the end of the season. The result… 1-17. MGS D faced a very tough match against their own C team. The score was 7-11, but the score didn’t reflect the closeness of some of the games won/lost on the evening, but the one person who took all of her 6 games was Lyn Hosegood for LOTM. Hawks D fell at home to their own C team by the margin of 4 games to 14; Maxine Watson & Gail Sinclair took all of their 6. St. Andrews B beat Carlton B 15-3 to get their campaign off to a winning start. Charlotte Heyes was LOTM for taking her 6. Already I can’t wait for next week as Andy’s travel to Crusaders…. Who is gonna flex their muscles in this match I wonder?
In 3, Matt Seddon & Janet Rance from MGS E won the final pair of games in an 8 all classic to help win the match when they hosted S. Andrews C. Matt also won 5 games to be the best player on the night. Hawks F got a bit of a bashing from their own E team as Laura Egan took all her 6 games to be LOTM in the 3-15 victory. Clayton B beat Penwortham A 16-2 to go top of the shop on game difference over Hawks E.
Clitheroe B having had a ‘gap year’ returned with a 7-11 shock defeat to the hands of their local rivals Flight. David Bradley & Ian Bythel won 5 games each to be best on the night & lie in joint 3rd, a rarity I know, but I bet it’s a different story next week when they face the current leaders; Crusaders, who like the rest of the teams in the club, seem on form! Springfields C were beaten 7-11 at home this week by old rivals, Evergreens A; Derek Hilton & Helen Pickup won 5 games.
In 4, Preston College A drew 9-9 with their own B team in an ever so tight match….. and it was the A team who needed the last 2 games in the final set to earn the draw! Dave Dunk won 5 to be the best on the night. The very 1st result to come in this season was this match… St. Andrews D v Crusaders C and what a close call it was as well in the end! It was 4 all after the levels followed by a split set in the 5th before Clayton won 4 games in a row to take them to 9. In the 8th Andy’s won both games and in the final set, the games were split to give the 3 points to Clayton. Richard Langford won all of his 6 in this tight one to be awarded the MOTM. Penwortham B lost 3-15 at home to Springfields D who took all 4 points to sit at the top of the division at this early stage. Whittle B hosted their own A team and in a reversal of lines I usually say in these matches…. The B team won their own A team 11-7. Carol Heaton was the best on the night as she won 5 games as the match went into the early hrs. Evergreens B took the last 4 games to win their match 12-6 against MGS F. In the levels you could not split the 2 sides but 4 games in a row took gave home side the early advantage in the mixed. Ed Gilbertson won all his 6 to be MOTM.
In division 5, Project 12 a new team from Garstang hosted a 5 sided Evergreens C & took all 4 point in a 16-2 win. Clayton D beat their own E team 18-0 to be the best single result of the week; Sophia Wright was statistically best for LOTM. St. Andrews E got beat at home by Brindle who went away with all 4 point in a 5-13 win; Linda Kozera won 5 of her 6. Whittle C drew 9-9 with their own D team in another tight match at St. Johns Church hall. Personally vie always found these inner club clashes at the start of the season very ‘interesting’ as individuals and teams try to prove to selectors that they were wrong! Nevertheless the match indeed was very tight and no overall best player on the night here as it was very even!
