Mid Lancs – Week S

Report From Paul Eastham

This week in Division 1, MGS A managed to overcome Hawks A with an 11-7 home victory over them. The match was won in the 6th set as MGS blew Hawks away in the early sets, only a brave comeback in the last 3 sets saved the visitors blushes when they won 5 of the 6 games on offer to steal the bonus point. MGS move into joint 2nd place with the 3 points won.

In a crunch title chasing match, last year’s runners up, Cross Feathers took on Champions, David Lloyd at home and after the levels, the hosts were 5-3 up. Cross Feathers then built on this lead in the mixed when they won the next 4 games to at least earn a draw at 9-3. Scott Weber & Emily Hollis won a pair in the 6th set to take the score to 9-5, but Mike Johnston & Rach Graham won both games to 7 to win the match for Cross Feathers before Scott & Emily won the final pair of games to make the final match score 11-7. The win & 3 points keep Cross Feathers in pole position at the top with a lead of 6 points over joint 2nd place teams, MGS A & St. Andrews A… but they both have a match in hand, so it’s still gonna be tight!

Mid Lancs Week R

Report from Paul Eastham

This week in Division 1, Clitheroe felt the wrath of the leaders, Cross Feathers; they fell 2-16 at home as the sand of time starts draining away on their hopes of stopping up. Matt Tolman was the best player winning 5 of his 6 ‘played’ games.

MGS B got beat by their own A team 3-15 to remain in a precarious position above the red line, however the 4 point max win for the A team catapulted them into 3rd place on the tables. Jared Matthew & Rebecca Ashton won all their 6 to be the best.

Second place team, St. Andrews A had a cracking 12-6 win over an injury struggling David Lloyd. The much welcomed 3 points keeps Andy’s hopes alive of once again lifting the division 1 shield as they are 3 points adrift from Cross Feathers & they play David Lloyd next week. Liz Holt & Lizzie Balmforth won 5 games to be the best players on the evening. With around 6 games to go in this division & all the top teams due to play each other, it really is an open race & a fight to lift that giant shield!!!

Mid Lancs Week Q

This week in Division 1, the ‘old school’ met again in a crucial clash at Wellfield. The match, as expected, was ever so tight and it started with 3 split levels sets before Andy’s took a pair in the Ladies 4th set to go 3-5 ahead. A split opening mixed set was followed by Rick Wallbank & Jen Rigby winning a pair in the 6th set to even the score at 6 all. Steve Taylor & Liz Holt immediately stuck back winning a pair in the 7th to take the score to 6-8. The final 2 sets were split including a score of 16-17 to Steve & Liz in the final set to give St. Andrews the victory & 3 points in the bag in this vital title chasing match. The result takes Andy’s into 2nd place, keeps MGS in 4th as the best player on the night was Liz, she won 5 games to help Andy’s victory.

Hawks A had a right old battle against Carlton A this week & at 4 all after the levels it was game on! The opening mixed set was split before Chris Foote & Michelle Skinner won both games in set 6 to go 7-5 in front. Sets 7 & 8 were split to take the score to 9-7 to leave a thrilling finale in which Dave Wiseman & Jane Parkinson won both games for Carlton 15-17 & 10-15 to earn a draw for the visitors. Dave also won 5 games to be the best player & make the difference to help grab the draw.

MGS B got beat 6-12 at home by leaders of the division, Cross Feathers, however, the home team won the vital bonus point in the 8th set to help their relegation worries. Mike Johnson won all of his 6 to be the MOTM & keep the team in the top slot.

Crusaders A clashed with Clitheroe A in a bottom of the table scrabble for pts. Crusaders won all the Men’s & a single Ladies game to go 5-3 ahead going into the mixed & Clayton struck hard in the opening sets winning 5 games in a row to win the match. The 1st ever win in division 1 must have gone to their head, as they then lost the remaining 5 games of the match to make a final score of 10-8. Best on the night was Azam Sharif, he won 5 games to help assist in the 1st ever historic win!
