Not quite good enough on the night to steal a point against an experienced team lying 3rd in the division.
In four of the games that we lost we were only 4 points or less behind including a marathon 1st men’s game which went to setting.
Having said that, we did pinch a couple of games 15-13 after coming from behind.
A hard fought match played on carpet – oh my aching limbs!
A good night for St Andrews at home this week, the B team had an emphatic 14-4 win
against Hawks C and the E team got back to winning ways by beating Hawks G 11-7.
A good all round performance again by the E team led by Josh who picked up all
his 6 games.
I am sorry to record that Gerry Huskisson, who was a well-liked member of St Andrews Badminton Club some years ago, passed away on 8 February 2011. Some of the older club members who knew him paid their respects at his funeral.
Gerry was club secretary for a considerable period and relinquished this position in 1981 due to work commitments abroad but returned to play at the club, mainly at a social level, a few years later.
Most of the current membership will not remember Gerry but I would like to take this opportunity for us to recognise his contribution to the history and continuance of our club and offer our condolences to his family.
Against the top team in the division we knew we were in for a battle.
A 14-4 defeat was no disgrace as only our D team has won more than 4 games in a match against this team so far this
season. It was also good to see that every member of the team contributed to
the 4 games. We were actually only 6 points away from taking another two games off
them in the first men’s doubles. Taking a point off them would have done our D team a real
favour but unfortunately it was not to be.
The E team have quite a few games left to play so lets hope they can climb
the table a little by the end of the season. A good win over nearest rivals
Hawks G in the next match would be a really good start.
I enjoyed being back among the action again.
I would like to add my congratulations to Monday’s night’s winning team and also the whole squad for the way you have all improved so much in half a season. From watching and playing at club nights and partnering several of you in 4th team matches I have been really impressed with your developing skills, enthusiasm, humour and, not least, your excellent on-court conduct.
This is the largest group of young players that I can remember playing at the same time for the club (and I have been around since Mark was a lad!) so it certainly bodes well for the future of St Andrews Badminton Club. The only worry I now have is that my place in the 4th team is becoming vulnerable, but I am up for the challenge!
We must also recognise Helen’s dedication and coaching skills which have given you the opportunity to play competitively and improve.
