Garstang B v St Andrews E

Team: Richard, Graham, Stuart Helen A, Anne, Hannah B
Result: Won 13-5
Another great result for the Rubies which puts them 3 points clear at the top of Div 6 at the halfway point in the league season. Again we had to make some changes to the team due to player unavailability but Helen Anne and Stuart showed they were well up to the job. The men took all their 4 games but the ladies struggled to get going and dropped 3 games. So, having won the first mixed and lost the 3rd couple mixed in event 6 we were 7–5 up but this left no room for error if we were to go home with all 4 points. Our rising star Hannah had a disappointing night compared to her recent performances but perhaps this was understandable as she had bagged 4 games playing for the D team the night before.
So, it was left to the older end to do their stuff, which they did in some style. We all came back down the A6 happy with an excellent Friday night’s work. Richard and Helen paired really well, winning 6 and 5 games respectively. Graham at long last got his 6 too. (I cannot remember ever getting 6 before, if I have, it was several decades ago in the Green Flash age)

St Andrews E v Penwortham B

Team: Richard, Graham, Harry, Charlotte S, Lily, Hannah B

Result Won 11-7

The Rubies bounced back after their defeat last week with the same team, to achieve a great win over another of the teams who are setting the pace in Div 6.
It was a very even game up to event 7 when St Andrews led 8-6. Graham and Lily just failed to clinch the match in event 8. Having taken the first game convincingly, they proceeded to throw away a good lead in the second.
So, at 9-7 it was left up to Richard and Charlotte to finish it off which they did in style although they had to fight back  from behind in both games. I thought that
everyone was on top form in this match and took vital games. Congratulations to
Richard who took all his 6 games and a special mention for Lily who would also
have taken 6 if Mr H had not run out of steam.

St Andrews E v Whittle D – 29 Sept

Team: Graham, Richard, Harry, Hannah P, Charlotte S, Hannah B
Result: Won 16-2

Young Hannah B had a brilliant debut to league badminton playing at number three and came within two points of taking all her 6 games. Little and large at no. 1 pairing dropped the other game so Richard and Charlotte were the stars with their 6 games each.
This was a confidence boosting win but there are tougher matches to come.

St Andrews E v St Peters

Team: Lily, Hannah, Charlotte S, Richard, Graham, Harry.
Result: Won 13-5
The Ruby team made an excellent start to the season away at St Peters which is not an easy venue for St Andrews players due to the low ceiling . After a shaky start by the men, the ladies showed their superiority leaving us 6-2 up after the levels. St Peters pulled back to 7-5 but after getting used to the venue and the opposition we finished strongly taking the last 6 games to come away with maximum points. Everyone did their bit but Hannah deserves a special mention taking all her 6 games.

St Andrews E v Evergreens C

Result: Draw 9 all

Team:  Josh Graham Stuart Charlotte Anne Hannah
It was 4 all after the levels – due entirely to the ladies efforts!
However, due to the strength of our ladies it  looked like we had a chance to  do something in the mixed and so it proved.
We got to 8 all with Graham and Anne to play their No 1 couple who had been well beaten by Josh and Charlotte – so we fancied our chances.
We took the first one but could not make it two –  another chance for glory missed.
However  a draw  away to a team 4th in the league was still a creditable result.
This team could be fighting for promotion next season if the younger members keep improving and the older one can keep going.
Graham H

St Andrews E v Clayton Crusaders C

Team: Josh Graham Stuart Katie Anne Hannah

This was a tough match against good opponents.

We took an early lead after the mens and ladies doubles but their first mixed pairwere too good for us and they got back to 8 all.

Well done Josh and Katie for holding their nerve to pull us through to win 10-8,  but above all  this was a good team performance as everyone won 3 or 4 games.
