Hot News

St Peters grabbed 4 games off Penwortham tonight – just enough for the Rubies to be joint Div 6 champions and I am not too old to get excited about it. Thanks to all the rest of the team and subs for a great season.

St Andrews E v Crusaders C 1 March

Team: Richard, Graham, Harry, Charlotte S, Lily, Hannah B
Result: Won 14-4

The Rubies march on! Another 4 points in the bag and still on course for promotion. Even though we were 8-0 up after the levels and the final result looks convincing, there are stories behind the headlines. Graham and Harry had to dig deep to win their levels after being 14-9 down in the first game and then just winning the second to 12. After event 5 we had won the match but we still needed all 4 points to maintain our promotion bid and Crusaders were not about to make that easy. Graham and Lily lost the first game of event 6 but, after changing to a levels formation!? they came back to win a hard fought second. Harry and Hannah kept us on course by splitting their mixed but G&L were well beaten by their No 1 couple. It was left to Richard and Charlotte to assure us of 4 points in the last event. This was an all round team performance where we held our nerve in 5 games that were won by a margin of 3 points or less.
Richard and Charlotte must be in line for some sort of club award of the season after winning all their six games yet again and Harry came back to form with 5 games. Hannah was on absolutely top form and played with great self assurance at No 3 to win 5 of her games.

St Andrews E v Hawks G 23rd Feb

Team: Richard, Graham, Harry, Charlotte S, Lily, Hannah B

Result Won 10-8

This was another crunch match for the Rubies against near promotion rivals Hawks. Richard & Harry got off to a great start coming back from 10-13 to win 15-13 and then took the second game easily. Charlotte & Hannah then won two solid games to give us a 4-0 lead. Graham & Harry were well beaten by their strong second pairing but Lily & Hannah got their act together to take the second game to make it 5-3 up after the levels. Richard & Charlotte continued their good form to win the first mixed but this was pulled back after Graham & Lily were well beaten. Harry & Hannah then won a vital game against their No 2 couple to make it 8-6 but Graham & Lily could not clinch the win. So, we were left with an 8 all classic. There was optimism in the camp as Richard & Charlotte went on court against their No 2 couple and two hard fought games saw us come out the winners 10-8 in a great match played in good spirit.
With Graham firing blanks all night it was left to the rest of the team to get the result. Charlotte & Richard deserve the gold medals for their outstanding performances in getting 6 games each but our young star Hannah also deserves a special mention in quietly picking up 4 games in this vital win.
The form book now gives us every chance of promotion or even an outside chance for the championship but in either case we need to win our last 3 games convincingly.

Church Road Closed

Church Road is closed to vehicles just before the Cross (again) so there is no access to the Club/Worden Lane/ Fox Lane from Church Road. This will affect anyone coming to Club from East or North Leyland. Best option probably is to use Tesco Car Park

St Andrews E v Whittle C

Team: Richard Graham Harry Lily Janet Hannah P
Result: Draw 9-9
Its getting tight at the top of Div 6. Whittle C did us a favour last
week by beating Hawks and helping to spread the points out. However
Penwortham crept up on us to be joint top after a 4 point win . A good result aginst Whittle C was therefore vital to stay in the hunt. We could not field  our usual team due to exam commitments and illness so Janet Dalton stepped into the breach for Charlotte S and Hannah P stood in as a very late replacement for Hannah B. Richard and Harry got us off to a good start but Whittle were too strong for us in the rest of the levels so 6-2 down was not the start we wanted.  Richard and Lily pulled two back but Graham and Janet were well beaten so that was 8-4. All looked lost and perhaps a getting a point was the best we could hope for. However Harry and Hannah got their first game in the next event and then Graham and Janet won their first game at the same time as H & H won their second. Unbelievably, a win looked possible but this must have got to G & J as they promptly lost their second game. However a draw was still there for the taking if Richard and Lily could hold their nerve which they duly did. Five star man of the match was Richard who, not for the first time this season, was outstanding in winning all his 6 games ably assisted by his new partner for this match, Lily, who picked up 4. A big thank you to Hannah and particulary Janet who stepped in despite being short of match (or any other) practice. The Rubies live to fight another day- expect a good scrap at Penwortham next Wednesday!

St Andrews E v St Peters

Team: Richard, Graham, Henry, Helen A, Hannah B, Lily
Result Won 15-3
Another 4 point win keeps the Rubies on top of Div 6.
Henry, on his league debut at No 3, contributed more than his fair share with 5 games – well done! Dad took 6 (again) and mum 5, so well done to the Andrews! We took the opportunity to switch Hannah to No 2 and Lily to No 3 as a trial and both came out with 5 games. Graham, who must have had a reaction to last week, dropped 2 games which unfortunately dented Henry’s and Hannah’s results.
This was perhaps not an unexpected result against the bottom team but they did win their 3 games quite convincingly and in several games we were behind at the halfway stage. All-in-all a good match against a friendly and very sporting team.
