Report From Paul Eastham
This week in Division 1, MGS A managed to overcome Hawks A with an 11-7 home victory over them. The match was won in the 6th set as MGS blew Hawks away in the early sets, only a brave comeback in the last 3 sets saved the visitors blushes when they won 5 of the 6 games on offer to steal the bonus point. MGS move into joint 2nd place with the 3 points won.
In a crunch title chasing match, last year’s runners up, Cross Feathers took on Champions, David Lloyd at home and after the levels, the hosts were 5-3 up. Cross Feathers then built on this lead in the mixed when they won the next 4 games to at least earn a draw at 9-3. Scott Weber & Emily Hollis won a pair in the 6th set to take the score to 9-5, but Mike Johnston & Rach Graham won both games to 7 to win the match for Cross Feathers before Scott & Emily won the final pair of games to make the final match score 11-7. The win & 3 points keep Cross Feathers in pole position at the top with a lead of 6 points over joint 2nd place teams, MGS A & St. Andrews A… but they both have a match in hand, so it’s still gonna be tight!
In division 2, Hawks B beat Evergreens A 14-4 to take another step to lifting the winners shield; just one more win will seal that feat. Chris Hoyle was the MOTM on the night for winning all his 6 games in the No 3 Men’s slot.
Clayton Crusaders B remained rooted at the foot of the table with a 4-14 home defeat by 2nd place team, MGS C. The 4 pt win ensures that MGS take up the remaining promotion spot as Dania Lewis Baron & Alison P Truman won all their 6 games.
In Division 3, Clitheroe B remained in 3rd place when they thrashed bottom team, Hawks E 17-1 & it was Dave Sherrington & Marian Bamber who hit the headlines for the wrong reasons; they won the one game that stopped the total whitewash!
The hillbilly’s locked horns at the fort this week with their fellow promotion buddies, Carlton B and what a fabulous tight match it turned out to be. Dave Boon & Mick Cryer won the opening Men’s for Carlton & then Elaine Higginson & Alison Crosbie won the opening Ladies to even the match. Then a remarkable tussle of games were fought where sets 3,4,5 & 6 were all split before Carlton took the lead when Paul Smith & Jane Parkinson won a pair in the 7th to take the score to 6-8. The 8th set was again split & in the final set, Daniel Nixon & Elaine won both games to a nail biting 15 & 8 to draw the match on the evening! A truly exciting match by 2 teams that were relegated last year & immediately bounce back to the division where they truly belong. Elaine was the best player on the night, she managed to squeeze 5 games out of the final score line!
Hawks D managed to squeeze all 4 points out of a home win over Clayton Crusaders C. Graham & Anne Robinson won all of their 6 games to be the best pair on the evening to help bag all of the points to help keep their team in a healthy 4th place.
Evergreens B had a vital relegation clash with the team above them, MGS F and despite the extreme weather, it was game on! An opening Men’s set took Evergreens to an early 2-0 lead before the rest of the levels were split for a 5-3 lead. Andy Finch & Cheryl Parry won both games in the opening mixed set to square the match before Phil Barlow & Susan Bullen won a pair in the 6th to take Evergreens back in front again. Dave Bird & Lorna Hopper won both games in set 7 to even the score once again at 7 all. Set 8 was split and the match ended when Dave & Lorna won the final games to 8 & 5 to win the match for MGS at a score line of 8-10. The 3 points for MGS open up a 4 pt gap between the 2 teams, but Evergreens’ final matches are Clitheroe & Carlton, so I’m afraid it could be all over for them now. Dave was the MOTM on the night for taking all his 6.
In 4, St. Andrews C has a crucial promotion clash with their fellow joint placed team, Mythop & with both teams on the same points in joint pole position, it was game on! St. Andrews won 6 of the levels sets followed by a split opening mixed set to go 7-3 ahead. Then a remarkable turnaround happened in the following 3 sets as Mythop won all 6 games to go 7-9 in front going into the final set. Amit Patel & Zoe Watts kept the bottle & won both games 10 & 9 to earn a draw for Andy’s. The best player was Zoe, she won 5 of her 6 to help Andy’s salvage the 9 all draw; both teams remain in joint 1st place, but Mythop have 2 matches in hand as the battle to win the shield will continue in the final weeks of fixtures.
Project 12’s match was conceded by Whittle A.
Clayton Crusaders D had a 4 point max win over Whittle B to shoot them up the table. In the 13-5 win, Carl Charlesworth, Chris Cochrane & Jade Thornhill won 5 games each to be the best players & can still chase a promotion spot with max wins.
In Clayton’s 2nd match of the week, they hosted Garstang B, but this time failed to get any points as the visitors went home with a 5-13 victory. Lee Meakin & Fran Hellier won all their 6 games to keep Garstang in a very threatening 3rd place, 2 points from a promotion spot, but a crunch match is on the horizon when they host leaders, St. Andy’s in an eye watering match!
In 5, Clayton Crusaders E slipped into 4th place on the tables when their visitors, Brindle leapfrogged over them with a 4-14 victory. In the 4 point win, Miriam Charlesworth was LOTM on the night for winning all her 6 & help put the team in 3rd place.
Preston College B had a tough home match with Evergreens C this week & were on the ropes in the levels at 2-6 down. The opening mixed was split before Keith Gray & Pam Robinson pulled a pair back in the 6th set for a 5-7 score line. The 7th set was split & then Steve Dudley & Karen Kenyon won both games in the 8th set to wrap up the match for Evergreens. Dave Dunk & Jan Harrison won the final 2 games to end the match at 8-10 as Dave won 5 for College & Karen won 5 for Evergreens
Penwortham B beat St. Andrews D 12-6 but failed to get the max points as Matt Barton & Emma Ryding won the final pair of games in the 9th to steal the bonus point. Luisa Malaney was the LOTM on the evening for winning all of her 6 games.
Tables can be seen on fixtures live. Paul.
