Report From Paull Eastham
In division 1, Hawks A got beat 7-11 at home by St. Andrews A who move into 2nd place on the table with the 3 point win.
David Lloyd managed to take all 4 points at home, but only just when they hosted MGS B. In the 13-5 win, Clarky won all his 6 to be the MOTM and Alex Mackie won 4 games off the mighty club to threaten taking the vital bonus point off them.
Clayton Crusaders A got beat 3-15 at home by Cross Feathers who move into pole position at the top of the table with the max point win. Nathan Brown & Fay Andrews won all their 6 to be the best pair on the night. Yet again, I must say how tight the top of this division has become, just 3 points separating 4 teams and much more exciting than a 2 horse race.
In division 2, Hawks C got beat 2-16 by their own B team this week to keep 7 points clear at the top of the table. Statistically, the best player on the night was Jenny Brookfield.
MGS C had a clash this week with their own D team and in the levels, the ‘visitors’ gave them a run for their money as the score was all square going into the mixed. A split opening mixed set was followed by Matt Seddon & Christina Atkinson taking a pair in the 6th to put the C team 7-5 ahead. Matt Timms & Joy Moon built on this lead winning both in set 7 to put them 9-5 in front & then Matt & Christina took the required game in set 8 to take them through the magic 10. Final score was 11-7 to keep the C team in a solid 2nd place; 7 pts behind the leaders. Matt was the best player on the night, he won 5 of his 6 games.
Evergreens A had a tight match with Crusaders B this week and found themselves 3-5 down after the levels. Derek Hilton & Simone Binnes won both games in the opening mixed set 14 & 16 to square the match at 5 all. Then with a tit for tat, the sets went either way to the finish as the score ran out at 9 all to share the pts. Neil A Jones was MOTM for taking all his 6 games.
In Division 3, Carlton B beat Clitheroe B 11-7 to remain in pole position by a massive 10 points. The match got off to a very tight start as the 2 opening levels sets were all decided in setting; 17-16 & 17-14 in the Men’s and 17-14 & 17-15 in the Ladies
So, the hosts were up 4-0 and the 2nd Men’s was split before Clitheroe took a pair in the 2nd Ladies to make the score 5-3. Carlton then won the next 4 mixed games before Clitheroe stuck back with a pair in the 7th to leave the score teetering at 9-5. The remaining 2 sets were split to line up the 11-7 win as Dave Boon & daughter Heather Johnson won 5 to be the best pair on the night. Gill Fourie also won 5 for Clitheroe as the score mirrored the 1st match of the season score at Roefield.
MGS F got thrashed 0-18 by the Hillbilly’s this week and walking away with the division 4 shield last year seems a distant memory. The 4 point win keeps Garstang in a commanding 2nd place as Alison Crosbie was statistically the best player.
Crusaders C had a fine 4 point max win over opponents Evergreens B to take them clear of the solid red line were a pack of teams are all lurking around. Victor Chow was statistically the best player on the night.
In Division 4, Mythop beat a 5 sided Whittle B 13-5 to move into 3rd place on the tables & it was thanks to Pauline Weafer who made up the 3rd Lady to ensure everyone had a game on the evening. Colin Chisholm was the MOTM on the night for taking 6.
Garstang B found themselves on the ropes in the opening levels sets when they hosted Project 12; they lost the 1st Men’s 12 & 12 and the 1st Ladies in setting, 14 & 15 to be 0-4 down before winning the next 4 games to go into the mixed sets all square. John Jackson & Kat Plat took Project 12 back in the lead by winning a pair and then Paul Whitehouse & Sarah Coultas took them further ahead at 4-8 by also winning both games in set 6. Garstang then won a pair in set 7 to pull the score back to 6-8, but John & Kat won both games in the 8th to win the match for their team. Final score, 8-10 as John & Kat won all of their 6 games be the best players & help win the 3 pts; but the team still lies 3 pts adrift from safety over their opponents.
Penwortham A stayed in a very solid 2nd place on the table with a 12-6 win over Clayton Crusaders D. However, it could have been all 4 points for the hosts, but in the final set, Ben Armitage & Dawn Harrison won a game to snatch the vital bonus point to keep Clayton in a very competitive 4th place. Laura Heaton was the LOTM on the evening, she won all her 6 games @ 3rd.
Whittle A got beat 8-10 by leaders of the division, St. Andrews C who lead the division by 3 points. The visitors won the 1st Men’s & Ladies before Whittle struck back & won all the 2nd Men’s & Ladies to go into the mixed all square. Andrews then took the next 4 games to go 4-8 up and then the next 2 sets were split to give the visitors the win. Whittle prop up the table on 6 points and are 5 from safety as Richard Andrew & Zoe Watts were the best pair on the evening, winning 5 of their 6.
In division 5, the bottom club, St. Andrews D had a cracking match with the leaders Clayton Crusaders E and the hosts got off to a flying start winning 6 of the 8 levels including all 4 Ladies games. Clayton’s Will Logan & Dawn Harrison immediately stuck back in the opening mixed set by winning a pair to claw the score back to 6-4, but this was short lived as Matt Barton & Emma Ryding put Andy’s back in charge again at 8-4 by winning both games in set 6. Then a massive regrouping by Clayton ensured that the next 4 games were won convincingly by Ben Armitage & Linda Langford and then Will & Dawn again to pull the score even at 8 all and force a nail-biting final set. Ben & Linda won that opening game 13-15 to go 8-9 ahead, but Seb Curry & his partner Jane Godsland held their nerve and took the final game 15-9 to earn a draw for St. Andrews. A cracking result for the hosts who are 10 points adrift of the leaders and the MOTM on the night was Will, he won all of his 6 games.
