Report From Paul Eastham
In 1, MGS A beat Hawks A 16-2 to maintain 2nd position; Jared & Becky were once again the best pair on the night. (6 games).
MGS B gained their 1st points of the season when they hosted Clitheroe A. The match was always gonna be tight given both teams are hunting points at the bottom of the table and after the levels, the score was all square at 4 all as MGS took all the men’s & Clitheroe took the ladies. Rob Metcalfe & Lynn Hosegood won a pair in the opening mixed & then the 6th set was split before Damian Cooke & Julie Bates won a pair in the 7th for Clitheroe to tie the match again. In the 8th set, Adrian Greenwood & Alex MacKie won both games to take the score into 9-7 and then Rob & Lynn won the required game in the final set to help earn MGS the 3 points on the night. Rob, Adrian & Alison Leaver all won 5 games each. Captain Tom Lowe (who wasn’t playing due to a broken wrist) assured me they would have gained max points if he was playing this week! Well Tom, your fellow team mates (and me) want to wish that your sex life has a speedy recovery soon!
St. Andrews A showed newbies, Crusaders A why they won the division a record 20 times when they pasted them 17-1; commentators jinx got to Ashley Gibson who hits the headlines this week for being the chump who let the team down for a whitewash… he was on for a hat trick of MOTM awards; but was the one who lost the single game.. same old Ash, bottled it!
Cross Feathers played a blinder at home to the current Champs of the division, David Lloyd & at 1-5 down after the 3rd set, things were certainly looking bleak for the hosts. Emily Miller & Terry Lee Holmes pulled it back to 3-5 by winning both games in the 4th to 8 &16! Then the opening mixed set was split before David Lloyd conceded both games in set 6 due to Mark Tuttle picking up an injury, making the score even at 6 all. The final 3 sets were all nail-bitingly split to make the final score 9 all..!!!
Fair result on the night and I do wonder if that injury made the difference; no overall best player, but Mark did win all his 4.
In division 2, MGS E battled at the foot of the table with the team above them, Hawks C…. it wasn’t that much of a battle in the end, as Hawks romped away with all 4 points in a 3-15 victory. Ian Hunter & Jackie Atherton won all their 6 games.
Hawks B maintained pole position with a 14-4 victory over Evergreens A. The maximum point win opened up a 4 point gap as Chris Hoyle & Laura Egan won all their 6 games on the night to be the best pair. Next week they travel to Andy’s B.. crunch!
MGS D fought against St. Andrews B & to give you a flavour of how tight the match was, every levels set was split. The breakthrough came in the opening mixed when Martin Hobin & Alison P Trueman won a pair before Matt Norris & Sarah Gradwell won both in set 6 to even the score again at 6 all. Richard Everett & Helen Blackely won both in set 7 to help MGS go 8-6 ahead & then the final 2 sets were split to line their 1st victory for the hosts at 10-8 & take them out of the drop zone!
In Division 3, Clitheroe B won 14-4 at home to bottom team, Hawks E who still remain on -1 at the foot of the table. Stuart Davey was the MOTM on the evening, he won all of his 6 games to assist the team in getting 4 max points.
The Hillbilly’s hosted leaders, Carlton B at the fort this week… but I’m afraid that after the battle commenced they left the drawbridge down & Carlton did a runner with all 4 points in a 5-13 massacre to remain firmly in charge at the top by 8 points.
Hawks D kept in a firm 2nd place on the tables despite losing a nail biting 8 all classic to Clayton Crusaders C. In the tight match, the hosts were 5-3 up going into the mixed before set 5 & 6 were split & the visitors then squared the match at 7 all by winning a pair in the 7th set. The 8th was split to line up the 8 all classic, which Victor Chow & Katy Dutton won both game to 9 & 12 to help win the match for Crusaders. In the match which saw 5 split sets, Katy won 5 games to be the player.
In a battle at the foot of the table, Evergreens B best MGS F 12-6 but still remain in the drop zone as Pat Jackson & Mark Wolmersley won the final game of the match 12-15 to snatch the vital bonus point which separates the teams by 2 pts.
This week in division 4, St. Andrews C picked themselves up from last week’s defeat & battled hard against Mythop; but it wasn’t all plain sailing as after the levels they were all square at 4 all. The 1st mixed was split before Colin Chisholm & Helena Lemper struck a breakthrough in the 6th to go 5-7 up for Mythop. Another spilt set in the 7th was followed by a pair for Mythop; Chris Porter & Linda Settle winning them both to 5 to earn a 3 point win for the visitors. Andy’s won the final 2 games to end the match 8-10 but still cling on to joint 1st place and Mythop move into joint 3rd place on the tables. Colin was the best player on the night, he won 5 of his 6 in the No 3 slot & helped bag the crucial points for his team.
Project 12 had an ever so tight match with Whittle A this week. The 1st 3 sets were all split before set 4 was won by the visitors to be 3-5 up at the end of the levels. Paul Whitehouse & Kerry Nash won the opening mixed set to level the match for 12. Set 6 was split & then Simon Hardacre & Carol Heaton won both in set 7 to take a 6-8 lead for the visitors. The remaining 2 nail biting sets were split including Simon & Carol winning the last game of the match to win the match 8-10 for Whittle to set up their 1st win of the season, but still remain rooted at the foot of the table. Carol was the best player winning 5 games.
Whittle B lost 6-12 to Penwortham A who shoot into joint 1st place on the tables with the 3 pt win; Caroline Coxen was LOTM.
In 5, Clayton Crusaders F maintained top spot with a nail biting win over Brindle. The hosts were 5-3 up going into the mixed & the 1st mixed set was split before Ben Armitage & Rebecca Baxendale won a pair in the 6th to put Clayton 8-4 ahead.
Preston College B fought hard against Evergreens C; they were on the ropes from the start of the match, being 2-6 down after the levels before pulling a pair back in the opening mixed to be 4-6 down. Steve Dudley & Corinne Wagstaff won both games in set 6 to take Evergreens a whisper away from victory at 4-8. The next 2 sets were split to take the visitors over the winning line before College took the final to consolation games in the final set to wrap up the match at 8-10. Steve was MOTM for taking all of his 6 games on the night and help his team pull off the 3 point win.
Penwortham B thrashed St. Andrews D, 17-1 to go into joint 2nd place on the tables. Luisa Malaney was statistically the best.
