Report From Paul Eastham
This week in Division 1, Clitheroe A failed to get any points when they got beat 5-13 at home by Cross Feathers. Mike Jackson was the MOTM on the night for winning all of his 6 games in the No 1 slot & help move the team into joint 2nd on the tables.
MGS B fell 4-14 at home to their own A team to leave them propping up the rest of the division. Jared Matthew, Becky Ashton & John Davenport all won their 6 games on the night to help the team move into joint 2nd place on the tables.
Crusaders A are again struggling in this division as they lost again 2-16 to Carlton A; Phil Price & Cath Bagley won all their 6.
In division 2, St. Andrews B kept their 100% record with a fine 14-4 win over Clayton Crusaders A. Janette Norris & Sarah Gradwell starred on the night, they both won all of their 6 games to be the best players.
Hawks B moved into joint 1st place at the top of the table with a 12-6 win over their opponents on the night MGS C, who won the final 3 games of the match for the visitors to earn the bonus point and stop Hawks going sole leaders of the table. Jenny Brookfield was the LOTM on the evening as she won all of her 6 games in the No 3 slot for Hawks to help earn the win.
MGS D had a tight home match this week with their own E team who were 3-5 up after the levels. The 1st mixed set was split before Richard Everett & Jacqui Gibson won both games in set 6, 15-2 & 17-15 to square the match at 6 all. The 7th was split & in the 8th David Bird & Maria Lyon won both games 12 & 10 to put the E team 7-9 ahead. However, in the final set, Martin Hobin & Alison P. Truman won both games to salvage a draw for the D team & save their blushes on the evening.
Derek Hilton & Simone Binnes from Evergreens A won the final pair of games in set 9 to earn a draw for their team when they hosted Hawks C in a match that saw 5 split sets… 4 of them were all the levels! Derek & Simone won 5 to be the stars.
In Division 3, Carlton B remained clear leaders at top of the shop with a 16-2 win over Evergreens B. Paul Smith & Andrea Phillips were the best pair on the evening, they won all their 6 games in the No 2 slot.
The Hillbilly’s had a tough match at the fort this week when they hosted Clitheroe B. They were 5-3 up after the levels and quickly went 7-3 up after Dan Nixon & Elaine Higginson won a pair in the opening mixed set. Paul Cronshaw & Bethan Smith then immediately stuck back in the 6th set for Clitheroe to make the score 7-5 and then the remaining 3 sets were all split to make the final score 10-8 including Dan & Elaine winning the final game of the match to make the win possible. Dan & Elaine also were the best players on the night, they both won 5 games to help Garstang win the 3 points in the No 1 slot.
Hawks D won their home match against MGS F 12-6, but failed to get all 4 points as Mark Wolmersley & Pat Jackson won the final game of the match 6-15 to snatch the bonus point for MGS. Graham & Anne Robinson won all of their 6 on the night to be the best players in the No 2 slot & also helped Hawks stay in joint 2nd on the tables & push their opponents into 3rd place.
Clayton Crusaders C earned their 1st win at home this season with a 13-5 max point victory over bottom team Hawks E.
In division 4, Project 12 pulled of a terrific win, turning the match right around, when they hosted the leaders, St. Andrews C. After winning the opening Men’s game, they then lost the remaining levels sets to be 2-6 down going into the mixed & then Jonathan Jackson & Katt Platt won a pair in the opening mixed set to recover the score to 4-6, but Graham Forrest & Charlotte Heyes won both games in set 6 for Andy’s to open a 4 game lead again at 4-8. But then a fabulous onslaught by the hosts took place in the remaining 3 sets; they managed to win all 6 games to end up winning their 1st match of the season, 10-8! A stunned St. Andrews had to go back down the M6 licking their wounds and wondering what had just taken place. Jonathan was responsible for most of this action and was awarded with the MOTM for winning all of his 6 games on the night. Despite their 1st loss of the season, Andy’s cling on the lead at the top of the table and its Mythop next week!
Penwortham A fought hard at home this week to overcome opponents, Mythop. It was all plain sailing in the levels as the hosts went 6-2 up in the levels, but then 3 gruelling split mixed sets took place to take the score to 9-5 and then Chris Porter & Elizabeth Davis won a pair in the 8th for Mythop to pull the score back to 9-7 & set up a squeaky bum final set. Roger Swansbury & Maureen Turner won the required game, 15-6 to go through the winning post as Mythop got the consolation final game to end the match. The 10-8 win takes Penwortham into 3rd place on the tables, leapfrogging over their opponents.
Whittle A found all things square after the levels with their home match against Crusaders A. But they went 4-6 down after the 1st mixed before the hosts levelled again at 6 all & then a massive onslaught by Clayton saw them take all the remaining 6 games to win the match 6-12 & take the team to joint 1st place at the top of the tables; Carl Charlesworth & Robert Langford did most of the damage on the night, they won all their 6 games & those crucial mixed ones to make the win possible.
Whittle B’s match against Garstang B is tonight and I cannot produce the report tomorrow….! Sorry Guys…. L
In Division 5, Brindle’s match with Penwortham B started ever so tight in the levels with the 1st 2 sets being split and each team gaining a pair in set 3 and 4 to go into the levels at 4 all. In set 5 Guy Wallace & Cathryn Jackson from Pen won a pair to go 4-6 up before Nick Fish & Linda Kozera won both games in set 6 to square the match again. Dave Jackson & Luisa Malaney won both in set 7 to take Pen back to 2 in front. A split set in the 8th took the match score to 7-9 before Dave & Luisa polished the match off by winning both games in the final set to help win the match 7-11. Luisa was the LOTM on the night for taking her 6
Preston College B won their home match against St. Andrews D 15-3 as Dave Dunk, Jan Harrison & Neil Duke all won their 6.
Evergreens C had a tight match with Preston College A & were 3-5 down after the levels. A split set in the opening mixed was followed by Evergreens winning 4 games in a row to go 8-6 ahead, but Mick & Hazel Bradshaw won both in set 8 to set up a nail biting final set. Dave Dunk won the 1st game 13-15 & then Steve Drinkwater & Pauline Charnock held their nerve to win the final game 15-12 to earn a draw for Evergreens & help keep the team in 2nd place on the tables. Hazel won 5 games.
