Report From Paul Eastham:
Here we go again… the 2016/17 season is upon us & a big thank you for the prompt cards yet again via whatsapp & email.
As always, all the fixtures, results and tables can then be seen ‘live’ and online at http://w.fixtureslive.com/
The 1st fixture in division 1 of the new season was Carlton A who took on David Lloyd at home and needless to say the visitors got off to their usual start by thrashing them 0-18 with only 3 games going into double figures. Joanna Holt was statistically the best player on the evening to help get the Champs off to a perfect start.
Hawks A beat their own B team 16-2 as Cathy Atfield was statistically the best player on the night.
MGS B beat their newly promoted C team 14-4 as Tom Lowe & Jared Matthew won all of their 6 games.
Last year’s runner up, Cross Feathers took on St. Andrews A and didn’t quite have the easy ride that they had last year. 2 pairs & 2 split sets in the levels meant that going into the levels all square. Rach Graham & Mike Johnson won the opening mixed set 15-13 & 17-15 to go up 6-4, this was then followed by a split set in the 6th and Andy’s won a pair in the 7th to even the score again at 7 all. The 8th was split again before Rach & Mike stepped on court to win the final pair of games, both to 7 to win the very tight match 10-8…phew! Rach was the LOTM on the evening for taking all her 6 & making the win possible.
In division 2, Carlton B had a tight opening match against newly promoted Evergreens A. Going into the mixed the scores were tied after halving the levels before the visitor took both games in set 5 to strike up a 2 game lead. Carlton instantly struck back winning both in set 6 to square the match again and then this was followed by 2 split sets to set up an 8 all classic. Phil Barlow & Lynette Tidy took both games 11-15 & 9-15 to seal the match for Evergreens to set up the perfect start to their new season in div 2. Despite being on the losing team, Jane Parkinson was the best player by picking up 5 games.
St. Andrews B beat Clitheroe A 11-7 in their opening match but found themselves relying on the Ladies in the levels to square the match as the blokes lost all their 4. The mixed started with 2 split sets before Andy’s took a pair in the 7th set to go 8-6 up. A split in the 8th was followed by Roger Leigh & Janette Norris polishing the match off to take the match 11-7.
Hawks C beat their own D team 16-2 to take the early lead at the top of the table but the final D teams score did not justify their play, as 4 games went to setting! Matty Timms was statistically the best player on the evening.
The Hillbilly’s first match of the season was at the Fort taking on last year’s division 1 team, Clayton Crusaders A. Despite the fort being in full lockdown and the draw bridge being locked up, the visitors managed to escape with all 4 points and head back down the M6 a happy team. Sam Ames was statistically the best player on the night in the No 3 slot.
In division 3, Clitheroe B managed to overcome St. Andrews C by 14 games to 4 to get off to a cracking start to the season.
Springfields A match with Penwortham A was postponed.
Crusaders B hosted their own D team at Wellfield and managed to take all 4 points in a 14-4 victory as Sam Gorrell, partner Ren Soni & Azam Sharif all won their 6 games to be the best players on the night. Nat Kane won the 4 that the B team got.
Evergreens B lost their opening match of the season 3-15 at home to MGS E. Maria Lyons, Jacqui Gibson & Richard Everett all won their 6 games to assist in taking all of the 4 points on offer back home and take the team to the top of the table.
In 4, Project 12 beat Evergreens C 12-6 as Jonathan Jackson & Sarah Coultas won all of their 6 games to be the best pair.
Penwortham B failed to get any points in their first match of the season when the faced MGS F at home. The best pair on the evening were Dave Bird & Lorna Hopper who won all of their 6 games to help take all of the 4 points on offer.
Crusaders E fought at home to beat visiting team, Whittle B and after being all square after the levels, it was game on! Crusaders took the early lead in the opening mixed set by taking a pair in the 5th; the 6th set was split and then Whittle took the pair of games in the 7th set to even the score at 7 all. The 8th set was yet again split to make an 8 all classic and Carl Charlesworth & Dawn Harrison won the final pair of games 15-13 & 15-8 to take the match 10-8. Carl won 5 to be the star!
Whittle A v Flight ????????????????
In 5, Brindle hosted Mythop, but failed to get any points in the match as they fell 5-13 as the visitors went home with all 4 of them to give the visitors an early pole position on the tables. Mark Green & partner Ngan Pilkington both won 5 games to be the best pair on the evening.
Preston College A had a scare on their opening match against their own B team when they instantly went 3-5 down after the levels. The A team fought back in the early mixed but still found themselves 7-9 down going into the final set. But the very experienced No 1 pair for years, Mick & Hazel Bradshaw, took both games 5 & 4 to save the blushes for the A team! Hazel & Sarah Kay won 5 games for the A team, but the MOTM on the evening was Kabir Sharif who took all his 6 for the B.
St. Andrews D had a tight opening match against Whittle C with the first 3 sets all being split before Whittle won a pair in the 4th to go 3-5 ahead. They then built on this lead in the mixed before Andy’s fought back to square the match in the 8th set. In the final set though, Gary Richardson & Joan Smalley won both games 7-17 & 5-15 to win the match for the visitors as Gary & Joan were the best pair on the night taking 5 of their 6 games, as did Seb Curry for Andy’s in the No 2 slot.
