Mid Lancs Week F

Report From Paul Eastham

In division 1 this week, Hawks B picked up a precious bonus point at the hands of St. Andy’s A when they were beat 7-11 at home. Andy Owen & Emily Miller ensured the point went in the bag in the final set when they won both games 15-12 & 15-5. Katie McWalters won her 6 games to be the LOTM on the evening. David Lloyd had another 4 point max victory over Carlton A. In the 13-5 win, it was Darren Whitley & Scott Webber who were the best players on the evening; they took 6 games each to be the best players in this clash. MGS B lost 3-15 to their own A team as Pete Fearns & Becky Ashton won their 6 to be the best pair on the night. Cross Feathers remain strong contenders to take the runners up spot in only their 2nd season in the league. This week they won 16-2 at home over this year’s whipping boys, Crusaders A, who only turned up with 5 players. Only Neil A-Jones & Ciara Pender stopping the total whitewash winning the 2 for Clayton. Paul Maguire won all his 6 games to be the MOTM on the evening, but their next match is the Champs, David Lloyd….. so lets see!!

In division 2, Carlton B lost 4-14 at home to Hawks C & in the maximum 4 point win the MOTM was Rob Courtley. The Hillbilly’s had a right old battle at the fort this week when they drew up the drawbridge to hosts Clitheroe A. The battle kicked off with the men’s winning all their 4 & Clitheroe’s ladies winning all of theirs to square the match after the levels. Damian Cooke & Louise Burrell then won both in the opening mixed set, 14-17 & 11-15 to go 4-6 in front for the visitors. A split 6th set followed by a double for Garstang evened up the match again! Another double was taken in the 8th by Damian & Louise to take the match score to 7-9 & leave a nail-biting finale! The pressure was on Stuart Smerdon & Sian Meakin to take both games to share the points on the night. Indeed, they did just that, they took both games to 15-10 & 15-13 to pull off a great draw. In this bloody battle, it was no surprise that Louise took home the LOTM for her 6 games & in special circumstances this time, Daniel Nixon also took home the MOTM his 6 & for his remarkable contribution at 3rd men’s for Garstang. MGS D beat their own E team 11-7 & that was mostly due to Hannah Robinson; she took her 6 to win the LOTM. St. Andrews B had a home tie this week with current leaders, Springfields A. After the levels, the score was all square at 4 all, a split set was followed by a double for Andy’s in the 6th set by Matt Norris & Hannah Burgess. In the 7th, Denzil Wates & partner Alison Parkinson-Truman won a double in that set to tie the match again. In the 8th, Matt & Hannah won both again to take the score to 9-7 & put the leaders on the ropes needing both games in set 9 to earn a draw. Up stepped Denzil & Alison again & won the final 2 games, a nail-biting 11-15 & 16-17!!!! I could feel the tension while typing! So, 9 all on the night & yet again Denzil went home with the MOTM award.

In division 3, Clitheroe B took all 4 points in a 13-5 victory over Clayton Crusaders D to stay in 3rd slot. Hawks D had a tight match with Clayton Crusaders C & the hosts were under pressure from the start. After the levels the score stood at 3-5 & then Phil Livesey & Beth Cowell won the opening mixed pair to square the match followed by a split mixed. The 7th was a walk over (I think) for Crusaders to take the score to 6-8 & then a nail-biting 8th set which was split 17-15 & 15-17 to make it 7-9. Phil & Beth then won the final pair of games in set 9 to draw the match on the evening & it also Phil was the best player on the night winning 5 of his 6 games. Evergreens A won 3-15 at Penwortham A to stay in charge of the division by a massive 7 points and partners Darren Clayton & Lynette Tidy won all of their 6 games again to be the best pair on the evening. Springfields B beat MGS F 13-5 & in the 4 pt max win it was Dave Farrant who went home with the MOTM award.

In division 4, a 5 sided Preston College B got beat 2-16 by St. Andrews C & Chris Young won 5 to be the best player. Project 12 got back to their winning ways with a narrow win over Preston College A. The home side were on the ropes from the off, being 3-5 down after the levels, but fought back in the mixed, winning 2 doubles in sets 5&6, followed by a spit in the 7th. Mick & Hazel Bradshaw then won a double in the 8th for College to go into the final set all square. In the 8 all classic, Paul Whitehouse & Sarah Coultas won the final pair of games to win the match for project 12 & also it was Paul who also took home the MOTM award for winning all his 6. Flight remained unbeaten, however it is only their 2nd match of the season! They won 11-7 when they took on Springfields C & the MOTM was Dave Bradley, he won all of his 6 games at 3rd Men’s slot. Clayton E battered Whittle B, 17-1 to go 10 pts clear at the top as Dylan Butcher was statistically best on the night

In division 5, Whittle D lost heavily at home to Evergreens C. However, the match score does not give the hosts much credit, as there were 4 games that went to setting & they lost every single one! MOTM was Chris Chatwood for 6.

James Norman & Helen Mellenchip from Mythop won the final game of the match at St. Andrews D to earn 3 pts for their team. In the narrow 8-10 win for the visitors the best player on the night was Mark Green who took 5.

Whittle C lost heavily at home to leaders, Penwortham B who now are clear by 3 pts after the 2-16 win.      Paul.
