Report by Paul Eastham
In the last proper week of fixtures this year, David Lloyd hosted MGS B and sent them home with a 17-1 defeat; only Tom Lowe & Alex Mackie stopped the total whitewash by winning the 1 game. Clarky was statistically best on the night. Hawks B got beat at home 3-15 by MGS A who stop in 2nd place on the tables; Andy Finch & Julie Bates won 6 games each. Cross Feathers had a fine 11-7 win over 3rd placed team Hawks A. At 5-3 up, the hosts were well established to build on this lead in the mixed to take the match as Fay Ormesher & Rachael Coar won 5 games each to help take the 3 points.
In division 2, Carlton B won 11-7 at home to the Hillbilly’s after winning the last 4 games in a row when the score stood at 7 all. Denzil Wates was mostly responsible for the damage, as he picked up all of his 6 games to take home the MOTM award. Hawks D had a shock home win over St. Andrews B this week as it was their 1st victory of the season over the 3rd placed team. After an 8 all classic, it was Irv Grimbaldeston & Emily Cholmondeley won the final 2 games 15-9 & 15-2 to seal the 1st win as Irv and Phil Livesey won all of their 6 games to be the best players on the night as did Charlotte Heyes for Andy’s. Clitheroe A fell 5-13 at home to joint leaders, Hawks C; Maxine Watson & Dan Porter chipped in with 5 games each. Springfields B conceded the match away to MGS C and consequently are duly fined with a 1 point deduction. Clayton Crusaders A lost their 2nd game of the season at the hands of MGS D. The hosts found themselves 3-5 down after the levels followed by a split in the opening mixed set. In set 6 Clayton squared the match, but then in the 7th MGS took both games and then the 8th & 9th were both close split sets to make the final score 8-10. The loss for Crusaders puts a serious dent in their promotion hopes & in the New Year will have to push hard to make up the 10 point deficit separating them & the dotted promotion line on the tables. Martin Hobin & Neil A. Jones won 5 games each for their respective teams.
In division 3, Hawks F paid the price for being at the foot of the table; they got beat 4-14 by the runaway leaders of the division, MGS E. Chief Neddy was on duty, but it was Toby Watson who took home the MOTM award for winning all his 6. Flight were beaten at home by Hawks E & in the 3-15 win it was Ian Hayhurst who was statistically the best player. Penwortham A lost an 8 all classic at the hands of Springfields C. Chris Porter & Jane Green won the final pair of games for the visitors 7-15 & 3-15 to take the 3 points back home with them. Penwortham were 5-3 up after the levels & Springs took both games in the opening mixed set to square the match and then this was followed by 3 split sets to force the decider in the 9th. Laura Heaton won 5 for Pen & Richard Knighton won 5 for Springs to be the best players on the night. St. Andrews C kept in 2nd place with a 14-4 win over Clitheroe B; along with the ‘Golden Oldies’, Hannah Burgess took 6.
In div 4, Springfields D failed to get any points out of the current leaders of the table when they fell 5-13 to Evergreens B. Springfields had the last 3 sets to snatch a game & therefore the bonus point, but the best pair on the evening; Lee Wigham & Kenyon were playing in 2 of those 3 sets & weren’t giving owt away to sit proudly at the top of the table at the year end. MGS F moved into joint 3rd place with a 14-4 max point win over Penwortham B. Mark Wolmersley, Chris Cochrane, Pat Jackson & Chief ‘Neddy’ AKA Phil Rhodes all won 5 games each to help take the 4 points & keep Pen firmly ‘rooted’. Whittle B stay in 3rd place on the tables this week as they won 11-7 at home to St. Andrews D. In the 3 point win, Peter Nelson and Simon Hardacre won 5 games each to be the best players on the evening. Crusaders C stayed in 2nd spot with a 14-4 win over Preston College A. Sophia Kelly, Luke Brown, Sophia Wright & Richard Langford all won 5 games each to stay in with a shout of promotion, but the 1st match in the New Year is MGS F!…. Crunch!
In 5, Brindle just managed to scrape the bonus point in the very last set when they got beat 6-12 at the hands of Mythop. The home team were looking defeat in the eyes after the levels as they were 0-8 down, but managed to scrape the bonus out of the mixed games. James Lydon & partner Alison Kirkham won all of their 6 games to be the best pair on the night. Garstang B took max points off a five side Whittle D to crawl away from the wooden spoon area with a 13-5 home win. Clayton Crusaders E had a bad night at the office when they got beat 1-17 at home to division leaders, Project 12. Esther Worthington & Chloe Nickeas won the one game for Crusaders as the leaders went 14 points clear at the top. Whittle C had a max point win over St. Andrews E to stay in 2nd spot on the tables. In the 13-5 victory, it was Ant Houghton & partner Denise Haydock who won all their 6 games to help take all the 4 points & keep on course for a shout for promotion. Meanwhile Crusaders D have 4 games in hand over the other top teams to have a say who goes up!
Well, that’s it from me this year folks; there are a few rearranged matches next week but it’s time for me to put my feet up & enjoy the festive period. All I can say now is have a happy & peaceful Christmas and enjoy the New Year celebrations!
