Mid Lancs Week i

Report by Paul Eastham

In division 1 this week, Carlton A had a crucial match at home against Hawks B and what a tight match it turned out to be. At the end of the match, Carlton won the final 3 games to scrape a draw after being 6-9 down. MGS A beat Cross Feathers 11-7 to go into 2nd place on the table. An array of people from both teams won 5 games each to assist the team to take advantage of other results & move into the runner up spot, were they haven’t been for a long time! Hawks A hosted St. Andrews A & as expected the match was very tight. After the very close games in the levels, the score was all square at 4 all before Hawks shot out in front in the mixed taking 4 mixed games in a row for an 8-4 score. This was then followed by 3 split mixed sets to finish the match with an 11-7 win for Hawks moving them into 3rd; Ric Wallbank won 5 Springfields got beat 2-16 at home by the Champions, David Lloyd & it means Captain Pam’s mission of taking at least a game off every team has now got to the ½ way point. It was Pam & Alison P Truman who took the 2 games!  🙂

In div 2, the Hillbilly’s wanted to build on last week’s 4 point win over Springers when they hosted bottom team, Hawks D & being 5-3 up after the mixed, things were looking good, but a close fight back in the mixed ensured a finale in set 9. Going into the final set, Garstang only needed 1 game & a split set gave them the game they needed to take the 3 points. Hawks C took advantage of Clayton’s defeat & moved into 2nd spot on the table with a 15-3 drumming over Carlton B. Dan Porter gets the MOTM award in this one for winning all of his 6 games as the race to the finishing line starts to boil over! Springfields B’s demise continues as they fell 4-14 at home to the hands of MGS D to ensure Springs stay in the drop zone. A title crunching match between MGS C & Crusaders A (who haven’t lost a match yet) took place this week at Wellfield. After the levels, the hosts were 5-3 up & then raced away in the mixed taking the next 2 sets. Set 7 was won by Clayton, but it was a too little too late 6 as the final 2 sets were split & MGS went over the winning line to take the match 11-7. Clayton’s 100% clean sheet went out of the window as Andy Finch & Rob Metcalf won 5 games each for MGS & Vikki Hatch won 5 for Crusaders, but the stronghold within the team of Sam Moss & Ciara Pender fell to pieces this week only winning 1 & 2 games respectively. The only player not to win a game was Chris Kelly & for that he wins the ‘quack of the week’ award.  😥

St. Andrews B beat Clitheroe A, 14-4 to take all 4 points & jump over Crusaders into 3rd place. Charlotte Heyes was LOTM. In division 3, MGS kept a point clear at the top with a 12-6 win over Flight; Chris Tomlinson & Judith Thompson won the final game to snatch the bonus point for the visitors. John Robinson won 5 games to be the best on the night. Hawks E lost at home this week to St. Andrews C. The 2-16 win keeps Andy’s in the promotion spot by 3 clear points. Clitheroe B had a fine win 11-7 win over Hawks F to keep them in a healthy mid table spot as Laura Cannon won LOTM. Clayton Crusaders B were breezing at 6-2 up after the levels with their match against Springfields C, but in the mixed the visitors fought back hard and managed to square the match in the 8th set. Sam Gorrell & Laura Bradley won the opening game in the final set, 15-10 for Clayton before Chris Porter & Jane Green won the final game 15-5 to help share the points on the evening for Springers. No overall best players, but with 5 split sets, I think everyone chipped in to earn the points! Evergreens A scraped a 10-8 win at home when they hosted Penwortham A; Derek Hilton was again the best player!

In division 4, Preston College A got a vital bonus point in the final set when they hosted Whittle B & that was mainly thanks to Hazel Bradshaw who won 5 games & snatch that point in the last set; however Tony Melling was the MOTM for winning 6 St. Andrews D beat a five sided Preston College B 12-6 but thanks to Azam Shaif, College got the bonus pt & MOTM award. MGS F had a fine 15-3 win over Springs D mainly thanks to Karl Cochrane AKA ‘Neddy No 1’ put a ‘sparking performance’ in to jointly share the MOTM award with his partner Jenny Stothard for both winning all  of their 6 games  🙂  Whittle A had a crunch match at home to Crusaders C this week and what a classic it was! The hosts were 3-5 down in the levels but went 7-5 in front in the mixed after winning both games in sets 5 & 6. In 7, Clayton squared the match up again as Whittle then took both in set 8 to go 9-7 in front going into the final set. Under pressure, Luke Brown & Sophia Wright won both games to help square the match for Crusaders as Luke also took home the MOTM award as well for taking all of his 6.

In 5, Mythop lost 5-13 at home this week to visitors, Whittle C; Ant Houghton won all of his 6 games to be the MOTM. Whittle D threw away a 7-1 lead after the levels to eventually draw their match with Brindle. The visitors thought they were dead & buried after the levels, but the fought back hard in the mixed to force the draw on Whittle. Everyone played well.  🙂  2nd placed Clayton Crusaders D had a ‘6 pointer’ match at home this week against leaders Project 12. At 4 all after the levels, the match was just as billed, but in the mixed the visitors won every single game to end up with a score line of 4-14. Taking all 4 points has now opened up a 8 point advantage over their rivals as Paul Whitehouse also took home the MOTM award. Evergreens C beat Clayton Crusaders E 12-6 as the visitors got their 1st point of the season; Clare Thompson was LOTM for 6. St. Andrews E had their 1st win of the season when they beat Garstang B 10-8; Seb Curry was MOTM for winning his 6.
