Reports from Paul Eastham:
In the last fixture week of the season, David Lloyd B had a relegation battle with Hawks B and as expected it was a tight match. Hawks got off to a cracking start & were 2-6 up after the levels before DL fought back in the mixed, but the visitors went over the finishing line in the 8th set to take the points home; final score, 8-10. Ric Wallbank was MOTM for his 6 games. Hawks A hosted St. Andrews A in a ‘6 pointer’ runner up decider match and again, as expected it was another close match that took place. After the levels the score stood at 3-5, but the home side fought back in the mixed taking both set 5 & 6. Andy’s then took the next 4 games in 7 & 8 to leave the score at 7-9, but Nick Hodgson & Faye Ormesher won the final pair of games to earn a draw for Hawks & keep their team in 2nd place after their final match of the season. The point’s difference between the 2 teams is 10 points, but Andy’s have 3 games to play, so the pressure is all on them to take the points on offer to become runners up once again. Nick was MOTM for taking all of his 6 games in this extremely tight top of the table clash. St Andrews B got thrashed at 1-17 home by the Champs, David Lloyd A. Mark Tuttle was statistically best on the evening.
In 2, the hillbilly’s hosted Springfields A in a desperate attempt to gain some crucial points to avoid the drop in their final match. At 4 all after the levels, Garstang were hopeful for some points, but in the mixed, Springs upped their gear and took the match 7-11. The result now relegates Garstang on game difference over Hawks D, as for Springs they have left it too late Hawks C won their match 12-6 this week when they played St. Andrews C. The result puts Hawks in top spot on game difference as Rob Courtley won all of his 6 games to be MOTM. The shield is now their to lose at Springfields! Springs B fell at home to Hawks D by 7 games to 11 to virtually be relegated as the only match they have left is against their own A team; as for Hawks, they avoid the drop by game difference only over Garstang. Irv was MOTM for his 6 at 3rd Mens. This is the one we have been waiting for… MGS C v Carlton B. The final score was 11-7 to put MGS in 2nd spot on game difference, however & probably thankfully, Carlton’s division1 quest is over! Claire Banfield was LOTM in this crucial match. Their final match is away at Andy’s C & must win to snatch the shield & hope Hawks C slip up at Springs, but they’re still up!
In division 3, MGS E got beat this week 8-10 at home to Champions, Clitheroe. The match was already won in set 7, but a late rally by the home side made the score much closer as Damian Evans won all of his 6 to be the MOTM on the night. Hawks E were beaten 3-15 at home by Evergreens A who finish in 4th place & for Hawks; they stay in division 3 next year. Flight got beat 6-12 at home by St Andrews D & are now relegated next season; Hannah Burgess won all her 6 to be LOTM. Battledore had a crucial relegation match with Penwortham A this week and they did there selves a big favour by winning the match 14-4 to ensure they maintain division 3 status next season. Louise Hustler was LOTM on the night for taking her 6. However for Penwortham, the curtains have shut tightly and the next time they will open is division 4 next season. Spring C got beat 2-16 at home when Clayton A blasted them to take the runners up spot & gain promotion into div 2 next year. Sam Moss & Neil A Jones won all of their 6 to assist in the great win to take the team up to the next level.
In 4, MGS F won 15-3 at home to Preston College A to take 3rd spot on the tables; Chris Cochrane & Jenny Stothard won 6. Penwortham B had a cracking draw at home to Whittle B; Ian Dockray & Luisa Malaney won the final pair of games in set 9, 17-15 & 15-8 to pull off the draw. Ian also won the MOTM for winning his 6 games but their fate was already sealed last week Ed Gilbertson & Karen Kenyon from Evergreens B won the final 2 games in the final set to earn a draw when they hosted Springfields D. no overall best performer on the night here as most partnerships chipped in with 4 games each.
In division 5, Dave Dunk & Jan Harrison from Preston College B won the final 2 games of the match 15-7 & 15-2 to earn a draw when they played Garstang B. The result dints Colleges chances of snatch of promotion, now needing max points in their final match and hoping Andy’s E slip up, but as they are to play Champs Crusaders C, I think it’s bye bye way gone! Clayton C beat their own E team 18-0 to stay out in front by 13 points; Kathy Yeung was statistically best on the evening. Clayton D beat Evergreens C, 11-7 as Heath Ntabagara won all of his 6 games to be the MOTM on the night. Whittle C moved up to joint 3rd with an 11-7 win over Brindle as Denise Haydock was yet again the LOTM for taking her 6.
