Mid Lancs Week N

In division 1 this week, MGS A had an almighty clash with 2nd placed hawks A. The match seemed to be going in MGS’s favour early doors, but the Julian Priestly went over on his ankle in the 2nd Men’s which then seemed to turn the match into Hawks’ favour. The visitors then ploughed ahead in the mixed & eventually won the match 7-11. The result keeps Hawks in a strong 2nd place; 3 pts ahead of Andy’s, but they do have a couple of games in hand over them. Julie Bates won 5 games.

Hawks B and MGS B drew this week in a tight match at Clayton. The visitors took the early lead & were 3-5 up after the levels & then Hawks levelled the match again in the 1st mixed. MGS then took the next 4 in a row taking the score to 5-9, but a brave fight back by Hawks ensured that at the end of the evening, the scores were tied at 9 games each. The result still keeps both teams looking over their shoulders as only 3 points keeps them separated from the danger drop zone. The best player on the evening was Lucy Hunt playing at 3rd Ladies; she picked up the LOTM for winning all of her 6 games.

In another battle to avoid the drop, St. Andrews B hosted David Lloyd B & what an epic it was! St. Andrews B clocked up their 1st win of the season up as they beat their opponents 10-8 after an extremely close match. Dave Savage & Janette Norris won the required game in the final set to win the match; however, it was Paul Hope who took the MOTM home for his 6 games. The result is a blow for DLB as the end of the season starts to approach, 3 pts adrift from safety seems like a mountain!

In 2, the Hillbilly’s hosted Springfields B in a bottom of the table clash. In a shock result, the visitors went away, not only with a win, but all 4 points as the hosts fell 3-15. Chris Smerdon won all of his 6 to be the MOTM on the night. The result takes Springs of the foot of the table (on game diff only!) for the 1st time this season, but both teams are still in the drop zone! Just above them, Hawks D hosted MGS D & in another scrap for points, MGS D won the last 5 games to take the match 6-12. Martin Hobin was once again declared MOTM for winning all his 6 & help assist the team to a 8 point off the drop zone. MGS C won 11-7 at home to St. Andrews C to go 3 points clear at the top of the table; Rob Oakes won 5 games to be the best player on the night. Next week MGS go to Spring’s to ensure the title race is just a 3 horse one! Springfields A drew at home with Carlton B as Ryan Ashcroft & Jane Parkinson won the final pair of games to stop the hosts from taking the 3 points. The match hung in the balance all the way through; 4 all after the levels & then tight in the mixed. It was fitting that the MOTM was Ryan, as he not only won the vital games at the end but all of his 6 on the evening.

In division 3, MGS E beat Hawks E 12-6 to maintain 4th spot; Rob Metcalfe was the MOTM on the evening in this one. Meanwhile Hawks Slip into the relegation spot & with a tie against Spring C next week; it’s gonna be a corking 6 pointer! St. Andrews D brushed aside Penwortham A in a 15-3 home win that keeps them up with the chasing pack. Hannah Burgess & Emma Dean were the 2 best players on the night, as they picked up 6 each. For Penwortham; the outlook looks gloomy! Flight’s topsy turvy season continued this week in a relegation battle with Springfields C. The final score was 7-11 to take both teams onto 15 points, just 3 above the drop zone; so the fight for survival continues for both teams in the coming weeks.

Evergreens A’s hopes of promotion faded even more this week with a 9 all draw at Battledore. Only for Derek Hilton & Helen Pickup winning the last 2 games to help share the points, Evergreens would have lost the game completely. However at the other end of the table, Battledore required the points to scramble away from the drop zone. The result keeps them 3 points from the ‘red line’, but the up & coming fixtures don’t play favourably in their hands & could go down to the wire with a final clash at bottom team Penwortham B in the final fixture of the season! Derek was MOTM on the night for his crucial 6 games. This is the one we have all been waiting for…. The Shield lifting match between Clayton Crusaders A & Clitheroe & as you would expect from a top of the table clash like this….. it was a tight result in the end! The big guns were out for both teams, but in set 8 the visitors fell over the winning line & eventually took the match 8-10 to open up a 7 point gap between the 2 teams. Crusaders have a game in hand, but barring any slip ups; the shield should now be in Clitheroe’s bag! Alison Leaver was the star in this match; she took all of her 6 games at 3rd Ladies to be the LOTM & assist the team in such a vital win.

In 4, Hawks F beat 12-6 Whittle B to stay in 2nd place by 5 points. Andrew & Maxine Garland won the final game of the match to snatch the bonus point for Whittle, but the star & LOTM on the night was Anne Robinson for winning all her 6. Springfields D had a fine 13-5 win over bottom team Preston College A to maintain 5th on the tables. Julie Youngs & Maureen Turner won 5 games each to assist in the max point win. College now need just short of a miracle to escape the dreaded drop MGS F had a superb win over their closest rivals, Hawks G to keep them in the mix with the leading pack. In the 13-5 max point win, Chris Cochrane was once again awarded with LOTM for winning all of her 6. In the remaining 4 fixtures, MGS have to play against both teams above them…… so it’s not over yet until the very last week! Penwortham B were beaten 5-13 at home by Crusaders B to leave them dangling in the danger drop zone; 4 points adrift from safety with a game less. The best pair on the evening were Tom Reid & Sophia Kelly; they both won 5 games each. Evergreens B won the last 4 games in a row to take the match 12-6 when they hosted Whittle A. MOTM; Lee Wigham took all of his 6 games to ensure the points were in the bag to ease any relegation worries.

In division 5, Clayton Crusaders D conceded to Preston College D & therefore are fined with a point deduction. Whittle D won the last 3 games to win the match 11-7 at home Brindle. Martin Charnock was the star on the evening; he took all of his 6 games including the last 2 to be awarded the MOTM. Crusaders E moved back into the black when Garstang B conceded & therefore are fined with a point deduction. Clayton C virtually sealed guaranteed promotion with a 7-11 win at St. Andrews E & now should march on to lift the shield; Richard Langford earned himself the MOTM on the night for winning all of his 6 games at 3rd Men’s position. Whittle C played hosts to Evergreens C and took 3 points in an 11-7 battle. The result keeps the home team in a solid 4th spot as Natalie Kane & Denise Haydock both chipped in 5 games each to help their team get the points in the bag.
