In division 1 this week, no card from Carlton A as yet, but I believe the score was 12-6 when they played St. Andrews B. Hawks B were on the receiving end of a 3-15 defeat from visitors, David Lloyd A; Wendy Higgin won all 6 to be LOTM. At the other end of the table, a potential runner’s up spot was being fought for between St. Andrews A & MGS A. After the levels the score stood at 3-5, but the home side shifted up a gear in the mixed to win 8 of the 10 mixed games to take the match 11-7. The best performer on the night was Liz Holt; she took 5 of her 6 games to help move the squad move into 2nd.
Leaders of 2, Hawks C, took a trip to 3rd placed Carlton B in a crucial match at Wellfield. As expected from the 2 sides, it was extremely close all the way through & no surprises to anyone that when set 9 was reached, the score was tied at 8 all. Paul Smith & Christabelle Le Boe won the final pair of games 15-13 & 15-7 to win the match 10-8 for Carlton; Christabelle won 5 games for Carlton & Rob Courtley took 5 for Hawks. The result keeps Hawks joint top & Carlton in 3rd spot just 2 pts behind. Hawks D fell at home to Springfields A by 6 games to 12, as Pam Clare won all of her 6 for Springs to be LOTM. The result leaves Hawks very vulnerable around the drop zone & for Springers; they face Carlton B next week in a crucial match! Mike Marwood & Jane Green from Springfields B won the final pair of games 15-10 & 15-13 to draw their match with MGS D. The overall match was tight all the way through, so a fair result on the night, but it was Martin Hobin who was the star; he earned himself the MOTM award for winning all of his 6 games of the 9 won for MGS. MGS C beat a 5 sided Garstang A 16-2 to move joint top with Hawks C.
In division 3, a relegation scrap took place between Battledore & Flight and what a scrap it was as well. With the score poised at 8-7, Battledore were in the driving seat, but Flight with their recent form pulled another joker card out of the pack to win the last 3 games to snatch the match 8-10. The result takes Flight out of the relegation spots for the 1st time this season & leapfrogs them over their opponents, but both teams are still a whisper away from danger. Amanda & David both won 6 each. At the other end of the table, the hunt for promotion was the on the agenda for Crusaders when they hosted St. Andrews D. Chris Kelly took home the MOTM in this tie for winning all of his 6 games as the final score panned out to be 14-4 to Clayton. With 4 points in the bag from this match, promotion is now just around the corner but with 2nd placed Crusaders hosting the leaders Clitheroe next week…. It’s not gonna be promotion on anyone’s minds; it will be ‘silverware’ on offer!!! Also in the mix for promotion were Evergreens A & MGS E. The match was ever so close as 7 out of the 9 sets were split; but it was MGS who stole the points on the evening, taking the match 8-10 to move a point behind their opponents & dint Evergreens hopes of promotion. Rob Metcalf was the best on the night here; he won 5 of his 6 games. Spring C were well beaten at home by leaders Clitheroe 1-17. Louise Burrill was statistically best on the evening.
In division 4, Hawks G beat Penwortham B 17-1 to keep in a solid 4th & now await next weeks ‘clash’ with MGS F. Preston College B were beaten at home by leaders Clayton B in a 3-15 defeat; just Mick & Hazel Bradshaw winning the 3 games to save the whitewash. Tom Reid & Rachel Sides won all of their 6 games to be the best pair on the evening. Hawks F took all 4 points at home when they hosted Springfields D. In the 13-5 win, Jinesh Mistry won all his 6 games to be the MOTM and assist to keep their promotion hopes looking very positive indeed. MGS F beat Evergreens B to keep the pressure on the top 2 teams in the hope that they might slip up in the coming weeks. Jenny Stothard & Chris Cochrane won all of their 6 games to be the best players on the evening in this tie. Whittle A moved onto the same points as their B team when they beat them 11-7 in a mirror image of the last time they met. The result still keeps them 3 points away from the drop zone as Carol Heaton picked up 5 games to be the best player.
In 5, Brindle had a cracking match with Crusaders D & in the end the result turned out to be a draw as Dylan Butcher & Amy Cooper won both games to ensure Clayton shared the points. The match was ever so tight all the way through with 5 sets being split. Everyone from both teams chipped in, so no overall best player in the one; but well done to the youth of Clayton. Garstang B conceded to Clayton B and are duly fined with a point deduction. Clayton E conceded to Whittle D and are also fined with a point deduction. Evergreens C lost at home to College B who took home all 4 points in a 5-13 victory; Dave Dunk & Jan Harrison won 6 each. Whittle C were beaten at home 7-11 by St. Andrews E as the visitors keep a stranglehold on the runners up spot. Richard Andrew, Zoe & Laura Watts all won 5 games each on the evening.
